Just about anything can be self-taught with enough patience and dedication. That being said, I don't recommend it.

Great now my post looks stupid! [IMG]

Personally I think it would be really hard to teach yourself to dance, you wouldn't be able to understand what level you are at technically.
You need somebody to see what you can do and then advise where you can improve.

Why not take a few proper lessons to get the basics and understand the technical aspects, then move on to trying to teach yourself other moves? Just a suggestion.

Take proper lessons or get a friend who can dance to practice and teach you. My girlfriend is trying to teach me to dance at the moment and I'm no dancer. It's pretty fun though but I find it hard to shake my hips when I hardly have hips, damn girls and their curvy form!

Just practice from the internet, make a video, put it on youtube, and we can judge how good you are.

It didn't stop ScuberS from putting on some horrid stuff.
Its the internets, you won't be able to see anyone that laughs at you.
But in all seriousness, you really do need someone who knows their stuff to advise you and tell you how you're doing.

You can teach yourself by copying other dancers and searching for tutorial videos, but when you are starting out it is REALLY important to have someone who knows what they're doing to help you - otherwise you can fall into some bad habits that will hold you back later on. I would be happy to teach you but don't even live in the same country [IMG]

Go to some classes and talk to the teacher about what things you want to learn - they can probably help you find some local dancers who practice whatever style of street dance that you choose (even within hip hop there are several styles/schools of dance - I practice nu skool/new style)...And the class will not be filled with seven year olds unless it's ballet. Most people start hip hop - or breaking or locking or popping - at a much older age (like mid-teens through to early twenties)

You can learn from the videos but it's only recommended after knowing the basics. There are basics to every type of dance. If you do learn from a video, memorize the moves first, then dance in front of a big mirror where you're able to see all your body movements. I used to do some dances of videos too. I used to break dance, but stopped for a long time due to knee problems. [IMG]
