Okay quick run down because I've spent too many hours trying to figure this all out.

RGH'd my current Jasper XBX - works great
Installed XeXMenu 1.2 and FreeStyleDash 3 - Works great
Had a friend flash my DVD Drive (no idea what it does, he says it can play burned discs, but idc honestly)

I've now come to the point where I want to start ripping/installing games to avoid using discs.

Here's what I've tried so far:

Ripped disc using XeX and FSD, both rip the disc completely to USB (G:\Games\Orange Box) for example

I then open up FSD, and I see Orange Box in my list of games. When I launch it however, I get the "Game cannot start, please download again." This happens regardless of how I rip. I even went as far as to go into XEX and find the XEX file for the disc and patch it. Still gets the "Cannot Start" message. The same also happens if I have an ISO and use XBX360Extractor to do the same.

What does work is if I take the ISO and run it through ISO2GOD and copy the GOD folder it creates to the USB drive.

Am I missing something and a total noob? Or can I only run ripped games through the internal drive?

Thanks for any help or pointers.

I'd ditch the external and upgrade the internal.
    But that's me.

You sure everything is ripped correctly?
You sure you've set the scandepth correctly so it's detecting the default.xex?

If yes then clear FSD's cache (in the settings)
If that doesn't work, reinstall FSD.
Then reset your scanfolders and let it scan again.

I might try the internal soon.

Here's what I did (starting over with empty external):

    1. Create GAMES folder on root of USB (don't think it's case sensitive, but I did call it "Games")
    2. Boot to FSD, run EXTRACT DVD. Pop disc in and it says Title: Orange Box, and extracted to USB0\Games - disc extracts 3.9GB
    3. Back to FSD, go into Settings->Content Settings->Game Options and set path to USB0\games - set scan depth to 3
    4. Go back to FSD and open XBX360 Games
    5. I see my copy of OrangeBox there with its cover and all (since I have cover download setup)
    6. I press A to launch, screen goes black, then comes back with "Game Cannot Start"

I'm not sure which cache to clear, and haven't yet reinstalled FSD. What are th steps to clear the cache?

    The FSD cache.
It should be somewhere in the settings.

You could try launching the game directly from FSD's filemanager (navigate to it and launch the default.xex)
See if it launches at all.

Otherwise I'd highly recommend reinstalling FSD.
Just follow me tutorial about it ;]

    Well I tried this.

    Removed FSD entirely.
    Boot to stock XBX dash
    Run XEX menu 1.2
Copied extracted DVD to HDD1:\XBOX 360 Games
Navigate to folder and launch default.xex
    System hangs on black screen.

If I boot from the disc, game loads up fine.

No idea what I'm doing wrong. I'll try extracting the DVD again using XEXMenu.

I think that your DVD drive is dying then.
Or at least not extracting properly.

Format your entire harddisk and re install everything.
    Start all clean.

If it still occurs, you could replace the DVD drive.

I'll try starting fresh. It wouldn't work earlier from extracted ISO's either. So not sure what's up. Going to try formatting if XEX Extract desn't work. Weird thing it plays the retail disc just fine.

Ok, using EXTRACTDVD from XEXMenu, and launching the default.xex from there works!
Going to try reinstalling FSD from your tutorial, I'll let you know how it goes.

    EDIT: This is from internal

    Hmm, Faulty USB prolly...
It's another reason why I prefer things internally ;p

Aye aye, good luck with it!

Well guess you called it :)

Formatted disk, followed your tutorial, and ripped to internal disc. Everything works flawlessly. Tried copying to USB devices and no luck.

Guess XBX hates USB devices more than PS3/Wii. Off to buy a 1TB internal drive!

Thanks again for all your wonderful help.

It could be your external HDD controller tho..
But I dun think that's the issue.

    Aye.
It'll look far neater having everything internal imho.
Good luck with it and no prob lad ;]
    Any time~

I tried a couple USB with same issue. But the internal 1tb works fine. So if ain't broke, don't fix it!

Hmm, then it's prolly that your USB controller is faulty (odd that it won't spew out an EXX error for it)
Or your ports could just be worn out.

    Aye indeed.
    That and internal is quicker.
    SATA vs USB ;]
