Some people can't play things that are not voice acted despite most games prior to the PS1 not having it, and it not being uncommon to lack it after that for a while.

Certain types of 3d graphics improvements are mandated. See also most N64 games and no small number of PS1 ones.

Online matchmaking? While I would certainly appreciate a return to user run servers (if for no other reason than the end of online games, especially the EA 2-3 years model, seems so pointless) I have met some that need quick match type setups, or have skill groupings changed things for you?

In my case Skate 2 and Skate 3. Can't play Tony Hawk games any more. 1-4 are some of my favourite memories of games, now the controls just hold it back.

While I said last game any particularly notable occurrences will play in this.

Destiny ruined Halo for me. At least the multiplayer aspect. It's more of a variety, and the net code is cleaner.. Not that it's perfect. I've had frustrating lag that ruined a match for me. However, I can't go back to Halo.

Edit: What the fuck was I on when I wrote this? I play Halo more than any other game out.

Forza Motorsport 4 set a really high bar for me for the series. Realistic racing, affinity levels for manufacturers, upgrades and tuning, auction house, custom liveries, etc. Now, with the release of Forza 7, lots of features are gone such as the auction house, affinity, and using upgraded cars in races. Not only that, they have loot boxes... In a racing sim...

I can't say that has ever happened to me personally. I don't usually go back to an older game in a series like Mario Kart or Smash Bros once a new game is out, but that's more because I already played the previous entries so much I got kind of bored of them and feel no need to go back since the newest entry is usually the best.
I still like going back to the original Smash Bros and Mario Kart DD sometimes though, I have a lot of nostalgia for them.

Come to think of it, one thing comes to mind. Final Fantasy X and Blue Dragon kind of ruined me for older JRPGs, having fully rendered cutscenes with voice acting just makes the game so much more immersive and emotional, FF7-FF9 and others just don't have the same impact, I still love them, but that is more because they just don't make games like that anymore, so it's not like I have a constant stream of new ones to play.
Not a game per se.
But a feature.

Gyro in FPS games on switch.

How do people even play with analogue sticks ?!
Controversial opinion, but I like the Steam Controller touchpad even more for camera control/aiming than gyros, it's almost as good as using a mouse. My ideal controller would have a normal d-pad on the left and a touchpad on the right, the left touchpad on the Steam Controller doesn't see much use and it's awful as a d-pad, so it's not very good in games that are made for a d-pad, that's the only downside to it for me. It's good for mapping a whole bunch of actions to (using the radial menu feature you can map like 15 actions to it) in MMOs and such though but those are really best played with a keyboard and mouse anyway, they use basically every key on the keyboard for something, mapping all that to a controller means using multiple action layers, and it's a hassle to remember it all.
But gyro aiming is nice too. I couldn't imagine playing Splatoon without it like some people do.

I've got two answers here.

One is the fast paced 3D shooters of the nineties (doom, Duke nukem, unreal, half life). At some point afterward, developers thought it would be fun if your running speed is about halved, your gun arsenal is decimated and hiding behind walls recovers your health. I still disagree wholeheartedly with them.

The other one kind of gradually developed over time: manuals. When I was a kid, reading the manuals from the Gameboy games was something you'd do at times (like... When the batteries were recharging). Later games taught the game as you went along, or had some other way to subtle judge you to new stuff.
Nowadays, games better do that, because I sure as hell am not digging through some manual to learn a game (sorry zachtronics... You're no exception)

I...can't really think of any TBH. I dunno if it's just rose tinted glasses or whatever, but I can't really name any game or anything I've played that have just overall ruined other things for me*, I can swap between new and older entries in series that have made big strides without issues. I've dealt with rough stuff in the past and I can deal with rough stuff now without issue.

*beyond perhaps things like remasters or remakes that integrate QOL updates or something but I don't think that necessarily fits with the theme of this old thread TBH

Well. Now that the THPS remake exists @FAST6191 and this thread got bumped, what say you now?
Well the Skate games play a lot differently from THPS, so I expect the remake isn't going to change anything. THPS is more arcade-like, vs Skate which is a lot more "technical", so they're kind of different games that just happen to have Skateboarding in common.

Basically anything that's really high quality and completely sucks me in until I finish it ruins all other games for me for a short period. Picking up something with completely different gameplay and in a completely different genre sometimes helps, but not always.

Examples of games which were that good:

Morrowind
Persona 4 Golden
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Mass Effect (1)
Dark Souls (3)
Batman: Arkham City

Just to name a few.

Pokemon heartgold and soulsilver ruined remakes for me by setting the bar too high. dont get me wrong ORAS is great game(s). but i wanted more.

if gen 4 remakes/remaster is lacklustre too. im going to write a very stern letter to the Pokemon company like:-

"i beg you please.......post game more please"

no i play vc still but i cant play gta 3 anymore....so i should say vc destroyed gta 3 for me
I was thinking more it was Vice City that made me unlikely to ever go replay GTA 3 again, that and going back to the start section without a tank and facing a barrage of shotgun fire.

i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling

even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i don't think nvidia wants to get in the x64 cpu market anyways
