    Another of the great looking releases of the year and one of a nice glut of open world RPGs we have been getting these last few months (unless you count Mass Effect 3 you are waiting until mid/late April for the "enhanced" Witcher 2 and Risen 2 (made by the same people that did the first three games in the Gothic series). Most previews I saw call it kind of a halfway house between the likes of skyrim and dark souls (although some say on the harder side of that divide and more combat oriented than most RPGs like this) and seemingly worth of being grouped with them which is good for developers that previously only did a nice strategy game in Rise of Empires, a nice expansion to age of empires 3 and the rather stunning XBLA version of (settlers of) Catan. It should be noted the demo had bugs aplenty so be warned/maybe consider the wait for a couple of patches and definitely back up saves/allow yourself to revert to a few hours earlier and such if you can.<br/><br/>

    I got the chance to play it for a while.... from what I have played it is the good stuff. If you played Venetica the other year this is what it wanted to be and what fable has always wanted to be (granted this makes my Fable- good version count now apply to pretty much every RPG I have played and spoken about on GBAtemp these last few years).

    If you took an MMO, the skill tree of a game like diablo (yes you can make a character fairly unique to you at least early in the game) and wound in a (sadly somewhat "unlockable"*) combat mechanic perhaps at a level with Zelda if not above it you (blocks, moves, timing, parries a "limit break" esque mode and more) would get something like this (UI wise also compared to the 360 I hold it as better than skyrim as much as I like the dual casting side of things). Hard mode is actually hard/requires thought in the ninja gaiden sense of the term (if you screw up it is probably your fault and on that note I have not encountered any real bugs yet). I have not had much chance to do much on the crafting side of things (it is around the same level as two worlds 2 or basic skyrim so far) or play the in game economy.
    *despite making few concious decisions towards it I drifted towards my usual magic and stealth mix although I went for melee mage rather than range and you start just being able to swing a staff but eventually unlock charged and counter moves. I do not doubt it will ease up but early on it might help to specialise a bit.

    Voice acting is quite nice with pretty much everything being voiced so far although that seems par for the course, story so far is a bit reminiscent of several classic fantasy works and other games but such is life- I will draw a tone comparison to fable so far as opposed to elder scrolls, might and magic or the witcher. Art design is somewhere between world of warcraft and fable but better than both (Mr McFarlane is on top form so far and has curbed a few of his lesser qualities it would seem).
    I have not got far into the world map yet and what I have seen is pretty much like world of warcraft (disclaimer- I played WOW on a private server for all of about 10 hours) and maybe a bit smaller than skyrim. World wise it is series of tunnels/corridors in the Phantasy star online or MagnaCarta II vein or perhaps a nice dungeon crawler but it works quite well and frankly most games of the genre kind of boil down to it.

    If you can not find a RPG between this, skyrim and dark souls you probably do not like western style RPGs and if the new final fantasy game is more or less just a polished up version of the previous then this is definitely the answer to it.

    More as and when and if I can I will answer more questions but the above seems to be the usual when dealing with this sort of game.
