A little more than ten days after launch, Microsoft's Kinect has sold one million units.

The peripheral arrived at the million units milestone a week ahead of Black Friday, and is expected to sell 5 million units by the end of the year, Microsoft announced today. The projections were raised from 3 million before the Kinect's launch.

Microsoft budgeted $500 million for Kinect marketing, and the device began making appearances on outlets like Oprah late last month. The Kinect launched November 4, and will be out in Europe later this week.

Still can't believe this is gonna outsell the Move. I mean at least the Move has good games and stuff for it.

IT HAS NO GAEMS!!!!!! HOW?!?!?!
The only 2 proper games it has are Dance Central (which is apparently quite good) and Sonic Free Riders (which apparently just fails). I suppose its being sold on potential right now.

Or maybe people are getting them in the hope of hacking them.
At least, that's what I think :3

There's already an OpenSource PC driver for the Kinect. They're not all being sold for that though. There's nothing to do with it unless you're a dev.

The Move has the problem of looking too much like a Wii rip-off. On top of this its quite expensive. The Kinect is £130 with a free game to use instantly and that's all you need. You'll never have to buy extras for multiplayer or extra controllers to play certain games. With the Move you have to buy the move starter pack and a navigation controller (£75 RRP from GAME) plus a game (£40). If you want to play multiplayer you'll have to buy another Move controller (£35 RRP) and navigation controller (£25 RRP) So that's a total of £135 for the 2 full controller sets and the PSEye and then another £40 for the game. Almost the cost of a Wii which comes with 2 games, a nunchuck, a controller and a MotionPlus.
I know the Kinect and Move are both expensive in their own right and the Move is cheaper for single-player but it looks like you have to buy a lot more and that scares off the casual market which the Kinect and Wii appeal to.

Plus labor, transport and R&D. $59 is the electrical components, it costs more to actually make one. I'm not saying there isn't a huge profit margin, but that $59 figure isn't the whole truth.

I don't think that could elevate the price around 100$.

Oh, and I forgot.

Move doesn't have a Killer App. There's no reason to but it. Same for Kinect.

This really does not surprise me. The kinect is actually really cool to use but the only good games for it are Dance Central and Sonic Free riders, which Sonic is actually really fun. At least it is not a ripoff of the wii like move is. I got mine waiting for the new Steel Battalion.

Several thoughts at this point in time

10 days is good, the next 10 (or indeed now-Christmas) will show evidence of a trend if one exists. There is a reason box office takings are weighted and first weekend is all important.

BOM (bill of materials) vs cost- do remember one does not equal the other.
