Ahead of its UK release on March 23rd, Kid Icarus: Uprising has received high praise from Japan’s weekly games mag Famitsu.

Andriasang reports that the latest issue awards Nintendo’s upcoming 3DS game 40/40 – the highest score it can hand out.

Famitsu works differently to most consumer mags in that it allows four critics to each give a score out of ten. Kid Icarus is only the 19th game to be given the top score and is the first 3DS title to do so.

Since its unveiling at E3 2010, the game has undergone what some believe to be a troubled development cycle.

Early press feedback spoke negatively of the game’s controls, with prolonged play said to cause hand pains in some players.

Nintendo has addressed these problems with further development time. The game will also ship with a not-especially-portable but very game-friendly stand that can house the console.

Nice, i've played this over a year ago, it was amazing then, can't wait to see how's it shaped up since then.

People still take Famitsu seriously?
Seems like it lol.
I think I have seen a few other 40/40 by them?

This got 40/40 on Famitsu.
That game was unique for its time, taking advantage of the original DS features and something new for the audience. 3DS versions didn't score full marks, in saying that it's not something I'd play. lol It sucks!
You probably did play it! LOL

Not saying Kid Icarus is a bad game.. the 100% could be justified :) wont know till I try it myself.

now now, obviously, the game that was already announced when the 3ds wasnt even released, that took so long to come out (its basically the duke nukem of the 3ds right now) needs to sell well and a 40/40 always helps this. so yeah, i'd guess its debatable if this 40/40 is justified.

non the less, its probably going to be a pretty good game, and most likely the best of its kind on the 3ds so far, so why not give it full points? why else would you even have the 40 option if it wasnt meant for good games

In that case, I expect every Kinect game to have consistently high scores in Famitsu.

I can't remember the last time gave an actual 40/40 that people cared about.

Japan hates the 360 dude. Any japanese developed 360 titles are for the western audience, and usually multi-platform with the PS3.

Bayonetta got a perfect score and the version reviewed was the Xbox 360 one.
Yes but it was a great game to begin with.

Nineteen games have received perfect scores from Famitsu. They are listed in chronological order:
  1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998, Nintendo, for Nintendo 64)[9]
  2. Soulcalibur (1999, Namco, for Dreamcast)[10]
  3. Vagrant Story (2000, Square Co., for PlayStation)[10]
  4. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003, Nintendo, for Nintendo GameCube)[10]
  5. Nintendogs (2005, Nintendo, for Nintendo DS)[10]
  6. Final Fantasy XII (2006, Square Enix, for PlayStation 2)[10]
  7. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008, Nintendo, for Wii)[11]
  8. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008, Konami, for PlayStation 3)[12]
  9. 428: Fūsa Sareta Shibuya de (2008, Sega, for Wii)[13]

  11. Monster Hunter Tri (2009, Capcom, for Wii)[15]
  12. Bayonetta (2009, Sega, for Xbox 360)[16]

  15. Pokémon Black and White (2010, Nintendo, for Nintendo DS)[19]
  16. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (2011, Nintendo, for Wii)[20]
  17. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011, Bethesda Softworks, for Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3) - the first non-Japanese game to receive a perfect score.[21]
  18. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (2012, Square Enix, for Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3)[22]
  19. Kid Icarus: Uprising (2012, Nintendo, for Nintendo 3DS)[23]
Famitsu perfect scores don't mean anything....and certainly don't represent perfect games. It's actually unclear what they mean? You could argue innovation, and then look at the list and realise it's not that. Technical prowess? No probably not. In the end Famitsu are a law unto themselves and are more a part of the corporate side pushing sales than the reviewer side pushing quality.

If FFXII scored 40/40 does that mean the Zodiac Job System version (which is agreed improves upon the original) would score 41/40? Is MGS4 REALLY a 40 when MGS3 isn't? (hint: No) Was NSMB Wii really that much of an evolution?

It seems like they've obviously had some staff changes in the past three or five years that are far more eager to hand out high scores than normal. They've pretty much lost the ability to be critical of a hyped up game. Or perhaps they've lost the ability to be critical of most games, period. Let's look at the list of games that has received a 39, which is essentially a perfect score, and difficult to be treated as otherwise:

Games that received a near-perfect score of 39 (in which one of four reviewers gives the game a "9" while the other three give "10s") include:
  1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991, Nintendo, for Super Famicom)[24]
  2. Virtua Fighter 2 (1995, Sega, for Sega Saturn)[24]
  3. Ridge Racer Revolution (1995, Namco, for PlayStation)[24]
  4. Super Mario 64 (1996, Nintendo, for Nintendo 64)[24]
  5. Tekken 3 (1998, Namco, for PlayStation)[24]
  6. Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram (1999, Sega, for Dreamcast)[24]
  7. Final Fantasy X (2001, Square Co., for PlayStation 2)[24]
  8. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (2001, Sony Computer Entertainment, for PlayStation 2)[24]
  9. Resident Evil (2002, Capcom, for Nintendo GameCube)[24]
  10. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (2004, Square Enix, for PlayStation 2)[25]
  11. Gran Turismo 4 (2004, Sony Computer Entertainment, for PlayStation 2)[24]
  12. Kingdom Hearts II (2005, Square Enix, for PlayStation 2)[26]
  13. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (2005, Konami, for PlayStation 2)[24]
  14. Dead or Alive 4 (2005, Tecmo, for Xbox 360)[27]
  15. Ōkami (2006, Capcom, for PlayStation 2)[28]
  16. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (2007, Nintendo, for Nintendo DS)[29]
  17. Grand Theft Auto IV (2008, Rockstar Games, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3)[30]
  18. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009, Activision, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3)[31]
  19. Final Fantasy XIII (2009, Square Enix, for PlayStation 3)[32]
  20. Red Dead Redemption (2010, Rockstar Games, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3)[33]
  21. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 (2010, Namco Bandai Games, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3)[34]
  22. Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010, Activision, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3)[35]
  23. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (2010, Capcom, for PlayStation Portable)[36]
  24. L.A. Noire (2011, Rockstar Games, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3)[37]
  25. Tales of Xillia (2011, Namco Bandai, for PlayStation 3)[38]
  26. Gears of War 3 (2011, Epic Games, for Xbox 360)[39]
  27. FIFA 12 (2011, EA Canada, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3)[40]
  28. Final Fantasy Type-0 (2011, Square Enix, for PSP)[41]
  29. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD Collection (2011, Kojima Productions, for PS3)[42]
  30. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3)[43]
  31. Resident Evil Revelations (2012, Capcom, for Nintendo 3DS)[44]

Notice how over half the list has spawned in the past (not even a full) seven years, against the 11 that have received a 39 '91 through '04, a 13 year span. They nearly doubled their output of highly rated games based on 39's alone. It also displays even more how score happy the team has been since about 2009, outputting 14 games with a score of 39, a feat which previously took 14 years, done in three. It's difficult to take recent scores seriously when they've been showing a lack of care in how they score games anymore.
