Well i found a cheap wii that has not been touched in 2 + years. The owner did soft mod it but doesn't remember what ios's are on it. I want to wipe it clean, should i use the wii format? or is there a better method that wont stop me from booting homebrew

The best actually if it just the IOS is to use Safe Updater 4.2
then you get the latest IOS files. Remember to install latest Homebrew channel and also Bootmii if possible to make a nand backup

Use this: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=171901

That'll update it safely as well as re-softmod it.

If you have trouble with the "Updating to 4.2: Installing Homebrew Channel and Bootmii", do the "Updating your wii" first, then try the "Installing HBC and Bootmii" part again. The only downside is if you brick, you can't fix it.
