I'm going to have several questions, because I am new to the Wii hacking scene, so I thought I would just make one big thread, and ask questions as I go along.

I recently hacked my 4.3U Wii, using Smashstack. I've been running everything via my 2GB SD card.

    1. Should I format this drive, and remove all bundled software?

    2. Should I format it to FAT32?

    3. What is this I hear about cIOS? What does it do? Do I need it to play my backups?

    1. Read number 2.
    2. You should format it to FAT32 or NTFS first then format it to WBFS.
    3. cIOS is required to play backups.

You can also partion it to have WBFS and FAT32 / NTFS.

If you plan on using the HDD for other things, use FAT32.

Stop freaking suggesting WBFS !! Just use FAT32 and WiiBackupManager to transfer your pseudo-"backups".

No need to format it as FAT or NTFS first - most drives are supplied preformatted, and even if not formatting a RAW drive direct to WBFS is fine - although WBFS is pointless.

I have a 32GB SD card so I don't need my HDD for homebrew apps and stuff. My whole HDD is for games only so thats why I suggest WBFS.

So FAT32 will work to play Backup's on, as long as I convert them to .wbfs with WiiBackupManager?

Hm... there is no option to format to FAT32. Only NTFS and exFAT. What to do?

Also, how/where do I install cIOS?

Yes, FAT32 is the best choice to use for backups. No idea about wiibackupmanager, but I imagine it works. I prefer to just use wbfs_file and copy the .wbfs file to the HD with the command line.

FAT32 Format / GUI Format can format to FAT32 in any windows version.

Download the cIOS20b installer and use that to install your cios.

the freeagent go's have spindown set to 5 minutes till the disc stop spinning. use the software that came with it to change it to never, or download it from he seagate website. Otherwis youll play a game for a bit and the hard drive will stop spinning and freeze on you

Yep, did that as soon as I got it, thanks!

So I went to install the cIOS, and it asks what IOS slot and stuff. I don't want to mess anything up, and I'm clueless on what to do.

    Question:

I currently have all my stuff (Homebrew Channel, all my apps) on my SD card. How do I get them to run from the USB drive, can I just transfer the files to my HDD, and plug it into the Wii?

If you haven't installed cios yet you want to install it to slot 249 and use a base of either 56.

copy the /apps/ dir from your SD card to your USB drive, and if the drive is compatible with the HBC it will display them.
