I just got my 3DS yesterday after having a DS Lite for ages and experimenting with the DSi XL. I do prefer the 3DS despite the smaller screen size. I had also bought a DSTWO and got it up and running with the DS Lite/XL just fine and updated it to run on the 3DS. Works great. Obviously there is still a lot of speculation going on regarding what will actually happen to the system after the update early next month. Most seem to think there won't be any bricking or, at most, some sort of online feature restriction.

So here's my question, if I could care less about taking the system online. Couldn't I just leave the wifi off on the system until more is known about the issue once the update comes out? Skip the update all together if everything is working fine right now the way I like it? In addition, I'm also curious if anybody has any thoughts as to whether or not certain games might require an updated system to play. I know there were several games that had come out for the Wii and if you didn't run the latest system updates prior to trying to run the game the system would not allow you to play until you updated the console.

Thoughts? I'm new to the forum and flash carts in general so please excuse my noobness.

Well most Wii Updates are optional, so I would expect it to be the same for the 3DS.
And yeah, you could hold off on updating.
But if the games require you to update, then it shouldn't matter much if it does block flash carts since you have a DS

It isn't mandatory, but it will disable many features and newer games won't be able to run. About the bricking if you are unsure wait until someone here update the 3ds and posts the result. If the console brick it will rain news, even on televesion.

If you dont update, you shouldn't have bought your 3DS in the first place. It adds many new functions and features to the 3DS you dont want to miss.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to update. However, if it stops me from using the DSTWO, that's something I'd have to consider seriously. I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but it seems like the update primarily adds the online stores and a web browser. I could care less about the web browser since I have my iPhone or an actual computer for that. The online stores would be cool, but I don't forsee myself spending a lot of money on downloadable content. I never really have done much of that anyway. Like I said, maybe I'm missing something. The primary reason I went to the 3DS of a DSi or just using my old DS Lite is so that I can have access to the big 3DS cart titles.

I'm sure that's what I'll do. I will just enjoy it as-is for now and see what happens. Overall I'm not too concerned, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't slightly nervous. Again, I definitely want to do the update... as long as it doesn't destroy something.

This update will be mandatory... but you wont obviously get the new features/bugfixes, newer games (like zelda) will certainly refuse to work... and eventually you'll get notifications/nagscreen every time you turn it on.

Do yourself a favor, do this update, if you care about flashcarts get/keep a DS, because DS games looks like shit on 3DS.

ok so why not just wait for the emulator on a comp and sell your 3ds since you dont want mobile netflix, 3d camera, 3d video recording(3d porn),more comprable friends list, and nintendo fondling your junk whenever they want.

I thought I read somewhere that the 3DS would automatically update for you even if you don't want to, or am I wrong.

People are talking about concern with the update because of running a flash cart prior to the update. I'm not sure I understand. If the cart doesn't change the firmware in the 3DS what's the big deal? Couldn't you just format your 3DS prior to the update coming out and not have to worry about anything? Sure you would lose all your saves, etc. In my particular case I don't have anything on the 3DS to lose other than having to reconfigure date, time, and so on.

EDIT
Just for fun (since I had nothing to lose), I decided to reformat the 3DS. It shows no activity log whatsoever for anything at all prior to formatting. No titles, no gameplay, nothing. Not sure if that makes it "safe" for updating.

Any thoughts from the handheld gurus?

I wouldn't be surprised if the update is optional, but like you said (and I figured originally) that certain games would likely require the update to even function. I do want the update and I haven't used my DSTWO since the time I originally posted and haven't even used my 3DS period since I reformatted.

Anybody figure there should be any issues with installing the update on a fully formatted system (no activity logs, etc)? If the DSTWO still works after the update - great. If people are reporting issues then I guess I'll just keep my DS Lite. I was hoping to just have one DS system (I like the 3DS better than my Lite anyway), but if I have to have two, I'll have two.
