Mewgia: Hey, thanks for your support! Yeah, I think It's a pretty easy to use application, but I guess we'll have to wait and se what the translators think about it.
unr69: Hi. I have already covered all the database part and now it's only down to making the app run (wich seems to be taking forever but the mods at the host claim to at least be working at it). That freeze-unfreeze thing I think is exclusive to Rails because, contrary to PHP, RoR applications seem to be like a mixture between languages like Java where something needs to be run kind of like a process and PHP where nothing is compiled. Right now, the error I'm getting when trying to access the app via a browser is something like "Ruby application failed to start properly" and that's why some people are advising me to freeze-unfreeze it (think of a Windows application ot working properly then you have to colse-reopen it).

Just take look at links I posted, there is some advice on how to track and fix the error.

Anyways, if something goes wrong, I have a backup plan.
I have already developed a translation system for one of my projects (pic) and I could modify it to suit the task better, host in a dedicated server and even provide it with a short domain name.

Update: Well today I received a message from one of the mods at the host that I find quite revealing. Basically I think they've realised the mistake is on their side and they seem to be working to fix this, although I don't know if and when they'll make it. Now I feel a little better but also ashamed cause it looks like I'm the first developer to use RoR in that host and I'm paying for it

I feel like a noob.

@dsbomb: definetly I should because it's made me loose a lot of time and I got so frustrated that I ended up eating a lot of chocolate and other foods I shouldn't... but that's not the point. Yeah, if things don't straighten themselves up at the beginning of the next week I will ask them for some kind of compensation.

Update: Great news! the app is now working after the stuff at the host fixed some things in the config files. Man, did they take their time! I still have to fix some functionalities that I don't know why aren't working, but this time I think we will have the app running properly for tomorrow.

Sorry i havent been following the whole topic, but what is this app your talking about supposed to do? Will it somehow automatically translate a game? Or create a patch for it to make it in english?

I think the idea is to have the Japanese text all in one big database. Then everyone can make contributions to English so it sounds good. Then it will be put all back into the game, or a patch for us to enjoy.

Man this sounds awesome

I really hope we can actually get a working translation!

I might be able to get someone to help with translating. Let me wait for them to login to MSN.

I think what beautifulbeast is trying to do is hosting some kind of website/server that allows our own user inputs and submissions in order to accelerate the translation process.

I do not speak Japanese, but I intend to contribute to this project by using my English skills and computer knowledge to share to the community out there who are helping out in this awesome project.

An awesome plan for all of us japanese-illiterates is to use Genroh's awesome translation faq from Gamefaqs in order to work on this project, with japanese-literates having a major hold on the process and language. beautifulbeast, would it be alright for you if you can personally ask Genroh to allow his guide to be used a translation source for us who want help out, but can't due to the language barrier? We could simply patch the modified rom with credits acknowledging Genroh's contribution the project by allowing his faq to be used as a translation source, and stating it somewhere in the credits or heck, even in the main menu. He'll be sure to agree with us on this. And we would further promote Jump! Ultimate Stars to people who are stingy on playing the japanese-infested menus of the original game as well as promote Genroh's Guide through the game itself.

GREAT NEWS!!!! JUSTP: Jump! Ultimate Stars is fully operative at crisistunity.com/justp/, so everyone rush and see what a wonderful job I've done! This means that JUSTP is officially entering EVANGELISM STAGE, wich means that we now have to find fansubbers to sub it.

Tomorrow morning I'll send an email to the guys at Dattebayo (if anyone here follows the original release of Naruto, I'm sure you'll know who they are), but it would be great if we had a list of fansubbers to recruit.
In order to ensure the best results, I think it would be a good idea if we only invited translators that we know or at least know their work or their skills, meaning that we better post here who we think we should invite, discuss it and then contact them.

As you can see, the layout is very poor right now, but I'm too lazy and not particularly gifted for that stuff. I want to change it to make it beautiful but I don't know what would be the best way to proceed. I remember some weeks ago some guy said he wanted to help, so I guess I'll contact him tomorrow (I'm tempted to start another contest, but seeing the last one wasn't very successful...)

Oh! I invited everyone here to go and check it, but I would rather you guys didn't create accounts, since those are meant for translators. You are free to watch the files dumped and don't need an account for that
biggrin.gif

So, that´s all for today. I'm happy to see it's finally taking off after these tough weeks (plus, I have an enterview for a job tomorrow and now at least I have some work to showcase

)

@NemesisHunter: How good is that translation you talk about? I had heard of it previously, but I don't know of anyone who's using it. Is it well written? For the moment I'd like to try my initial plan of using "pro" fansubbers, but your idea gives me something to think about and something to resort too in case we don0t get support from established fansubbers.

wow, this may actually take off and become successful!
At first I had my doubts, but looking at the website and simplicity of users downloading needed to be translated files and re-upping them translated looks very simple and speedy.
Can't wait!!!

Looking good, beautifulbeast! Nice job.

Are the translated phrases the ones in blue? The tutorial file already has some stuff translated?

By the way, when you have your account registration, do you have some kind of approval process? I would think that it wouldn't be wrong to have the account holders be manually approved, because, the last thing we'd want is some jerk to register with the intention of screwing up the translations. As unfortunate as it sounds, I could see people doing that..

Oh and best of luck with your job interview

Everything looks awesome beautifulbeast! Good work!

In response to your last enquiry, I've mentioned using Genroh's faq as a possible translation source for this project. However, I've failed to mention that this would be a possible fallback option in case we are unable to get our hands on professionals who can do the job decently. We can hold out on this idea of mine until we are really, REALLY desperate. But great idea on asking Dattebayo! You can also ask the Vegapunk fansub group from www.vegapunk.com, which takes care of the newest One Piece fansubs, which are, to me, of very, very high caliber. Seeing as Jump! Ultimate Stars represents the Pirate theme (assuming Naruto and especially Luffy is the flagship model of J!US), you could send them a quick e-mail. Not to say Dattebayo isn't any good on their part, but just throwing another fansub group that may be even better.

Update: You guys won't believe what happened when I tried to send this message to the Dattebayo staff through their contact form:

QUOTE said:
Hi,
I've been following your excellent Naruto fansubs for almost 2 years now and I think you'll be happy with this proposal.
The guys at gbatemp.com have set up a project to translate a NDS game called Jump! Ultimate Stars. You might have heard or it because it's a fighting game with over 100 character including Naruto, DBZ, One Piece, etc...
I call it "translation the wiki style" because all you have to do to collaborate is sign up (only your username and password is required) and then start translating phrase by phrase; something you can so in your free time without further commitment.
The result of this will be a patch that allows every user to translate the NDS rom of the game and play it in English.
I'm sending you this invitation because we would be very honored if the whole team or maybe some of it's members wanted to collaborate. If so, check out our web application at crisistunity.com/justp/ (the last slash is very important).
For any questions, don't hessitate to contact me.

Well, just the moment i sent it i arrive at a page saying "No thanks, One piece sucks" and now I'm banned from their site wich means I can't even access it. Well, if that's not rude...

Bad for good, NemesisHunter mentioned in one of his posts above another fansub called vegapunk, so I'l try to contact them and pray they are not that rude.

BTW, my job interview couldn't have been better. And the pay is good too!

Hehe, sucks that you're banned now. I think they have blacklisted a few words, "One Piece" being two of them. Props to the dedication and effort already put in this project by you. I would've helped, if I had known Japanese or NDS programming.

beautifulbeast If I had seen your post earlier I would have stopped you.

Even though Dattebayo fansub Naruto and everyone thinks they are some kind of saint for doing it, on the inside, they are complete assholes.

I've been on their IRC before, just acting completely normal and not saying anything that may offend them, and I ended up getting banned for typing "lol" after someone started flamming an OP.

I appreciate the work they do for others, fansubbing Naruto and Bleach, but I'd never ask them for a favor or even engage in a conversation with any of the members, because they are a bunch of pricks.

Not sure if you guys participate in the same forums as I do, but if any of you hang out at the Jump! Ultimate Stars Gamefaqs subforum, there are tons of users out there, many of them japanese natives...Maybe we can ask some of their help.
