Update: I'm sorry that I didn't post anything these past 2 or 3 days but I'm kind of stuck trying to deploy the site, i.e: getting a domain, generationg the database and installing it on a server. Again, if anybody could help, it would be greatly appreciated, but I guess none here is a web developer, so anyway.

@iamwhoiam: Once I've installed the application I guess I'll contact you to take care of the styling, but probably that won't happen in less than 2 days or so. In the meantime it would be cool if you could tell us about your css skills, projects you've worked on or if this is your first time (if that's so, welcome anyway since part of the fun in this project is learning to develop our own wep-app when we need it. POWER FOR THE PEOPLE!!).

Header contest To be honest, I was expecting would want to join in and create some fanart or composition with their favourite manga characters, but that being not the case, I guess I'll have to get down to Photoshop and create my own header. I'd like to complain, but bad for good, I could use some artistic work now that I'm so tired of programming and deploying.

@bladerx: Don't worry about the hosting: I already have a domain and everything. It's only that I have problems (or rather, don't even know how to start) installing the Rails application on that server, which is not as simple as uploading it through FTP).

As for the Spanish translation, you can find it here: http://jandujar.homelinux.com/index.php/Jump_Ultimate_Stars athough it's not 100% complete and I haven't been able to get past the tutorial

I have some knowledge of SQL and XML, but am hesitant to commit because I know I will be quite busy in the next couple weeks with final exams.

When you say "Rails application," I would hazard a guess that you are using Ruby on Rails for this application? Unfortunately, I don't know anything about Ruby... I have some J2EE web application experience, but no Ruby..

How about a low tech approach: Google Spreadsheets. I think they're shareable. Auditing and rolling back stuff might be problem though. Anyway, just a thought...

@wuka: Yeah, Initially I also considered the chance to use Google Spreadsheets, but I came up with a better solution to handle corrections, users and such. Now the app is completely operative and I only need to put it at work on a server (this wek hopefully).

@rcxAsh: Thanks god finally someone who might help. Actually it's something that won't keep you very busy at all, just one SQL instruction: I need to populate a table with the content of a text file (each phrase is in it's own line, no commas, no tabs, just carrier return). The problem comes with the encoding, because the text file is in JSHIFT and when I try to populate the table i get a message that some content has been cropped and then when I see the webpage the kanjis are broken. Any ideas?

Have a peek at http://www.myspace.com/bucket_o_random for my designing skills (needs tweaking at the top)
Also I used to run the Natural Selection site ukns.org ... but it has since closed
I can also edit vB, phpBB, infiniti profiles... and I used to run a wordpress blog... at the moment just travelling through the wonder that is University

Character encodings are always a headache. I'm not sure why you get a message saying the content has been cropped. But these are my initial thoughts:

If you're inserting Shift_JIS encoded strings, perhaps it might be good to make sure that your database and/or utility which generates the SQL statements is capable of handling Shift_JIS. If I understand correctly, Shift_JIS uses double-bytes for its characters. Not sure how this might affect things, but just a thought..

So a couple suggestions that come to my mind. One, if you want to keep the Shift_JIS encoding, see if you can set your database to use Shift_JIS as its charset? Two, if your database supports unicode pretty well, then consider converting all your strings from Shift_JIS to something like UTF-8, and then have your database use that unicode charset. If the game requires things to be in Shift_JIS, we could just convert it back from UTF-8 to Shift_JIS again.

Oh, one more thing, when you view the webpage after, what encoding are you viewing it in? So everything except the Kanji is displaying fine? The Hiragana and Katakana are both ok?

Hope I'll be of some help.. and not confuse things more...! Let me know what you find..

Last I heard from beautifulbeast, it sounds like he's working on finalizing the database and migrating it to the production server.

I'm very interested to see how this works out (the technical side of things). I know a limited amount of Ruby (just the syntax and structure mainly), but am clueless when it comes to web applications and the like.
Any chance that this could be deployed almost anywhere once things are worked out? For my translation project I'm using the wiki until I find a permanent translator

Update: Sorry that I haven't published in a long time, but I've been busy, mainly with the project. I'm still in deployment stage, working things out very slowly and, I'm serious, if anyone has any experience deploying in a shared host, please send me a message 'cause I'm pretty lost. It doesn't have to be in Ruby, I'm sure this stage has a lot to do in common with PHP and ASP and any kind of help would be greatly appreciated at this stage.

@Dirtie: This is my first time with Ruby AND first time deploying and the second is being a pain in the ass. If anytime you have a question about Ruby (not that I'm an expert or anything, but still), feel free to send me a message

What difficulties are you having deploying your application? Maybe we could help search for some info?

@rcxAsh: Basically, I'm using a shared host and now I have to create a database (MySQL) and update it's content, freeze the app then upload and unfreeze it (first time I hear about this term or freezing an application) and that's that. I don't think anyone here can help me in this, but rather I'd need someone with expertise in deploying dynamic applications, even if it was in PHP. I've been trying to get support from the host, but I'm not very happy with the results so far and it's going rather slowly. I think I started this stage like a week ago and no results so far

. Anyway, bad for good, I took over the evidence that none was going to submit a header and created one myself, wich looks rather nice and I also added some functionality to the site.

Just trying to think out loud here.. um, I've "deployed" a PHP application called b2evolution to my own webserver before, but PHP applications seem relatively easy to deploy. For the most part, just extract/copy all the PHP files.

In the old ASP 3.0 days, it was also for the most part this simple if I recall my playing around. (Not sure about the newer ASP .NET stuff though)

However, I'm guessing that something like Ruby would be more alike J2EE, and at least for J2EE applications, it's not as straight forward.

Though I've never deployed any serious J2EE applications, I know that it's a little more of an involved process than simply uploading a bunch of PHP files. (Typically, I think that your web application would be put together into a single web application archive file, something.war, for example, which is they deployed to the server; potentially an enterprise application archive, ear)

Just a short search on Google, from one of the first hits it sounds like, for Ruby, it depends on what kind of environment it's being deployed to? This is in a way, similar for J2EE I think. The host would have to provide you with this info.. sorry I can't be of too much help..! Does the webhost maybe provide a forum where you might be able to ask others there for help?

rcxAsh: The host I've rented does have a forum and lots of FAQS and tutorials, but not much for Rails. Plus, the support center isn't of much help either. Right now I'm getting an error "Rails application failed to start properly", I've emailed them but their answer doesn't help me to clear things up

I'm googling around, but to be honest I'm feeling quite dishearted that I have this great application running on my computer and I can't deploy it for the community and I'm not getting any help from the host either. Will keep trying but it sucks.

Hope you get it up soon, I can't wait for this project to take off! It sounds like the website will be easy to use and awesomely awesome. Then we just have to rope in translators.

I have plenty of experience with PHP/MySQL/UNIX and such, PM me if you need something.

create a database (MySQL)
Use your WebHost CP (cPanel/Plesk/etc) to do this, or if it does not provide such functionality, try phpMyAdmin or contact server administrator.

QUOTE said:
update it's content
In this case it`s the same as uploading table structure I guess. Install phpMyAdmin on localhost, use `Export` function to export and `SQL` function in host`s phpMyAdmin to import.

QUOTE
freeze the app then upload and unfreeze it
I don`t know if `freeze the app` is ruby-specific term, but I guess it boils down to simply uploading files to the webserver.

Edit: Regarding "Rails application failed to start properly":

@Beautifulbeast:
Spanish patch IS good... Almost everything's done (or well, much of it except the fluff part and special characters' abilities which can be found on plenty of faqs anyway. Missions briefings are fully translated anyway and that's much, since you don't have to check the objectives on the internet anymore, which was pretty annoying... However, my gf doesn't still know a fuck about Spanish so I would so much welcome an English Patch! Also, because English playing community would be cool to be with
smile.gif

So... good luck!
And btw, in case you're interested, the dev who made the patch sticks out usually at EOL NDS scene subforum (www.elotrolado.net, I guess you know them), his nickname is Mark R, if I'm not wrong
