    Hi everyone!

If you didnt know, our friend Josh (also known as SonicSlasher http://gbatemp.net/u...3-sonicslasher/ ) has started Air Force basic training a few weks ago. He is unfortunately isolated from the outside world, I mean the internetz, and the only way he can communicate with the rest of us is by regular mail.
So let's all write up a few words for him. Mthrnite will print out the thread and send him by the post!

Here is a letter he sent Our Dear Father mthrnite a few days ago:

    EDIT: Transcript here
    Warning: Spoilers inside!

If you managed to decypher his words ( :P ) he's asking us to bring him up to speed on the latest tech news, so if you dont know what to say, just tell him what's mattered for you lately gaming/tech wise.

Note: don't post big images or stretch out the page, we dont wanna be wasting paper here. Abusive posts will be removed.

    Thanks everyone!

    Hey Gary,

Life here at Basic Training is certainly interesting… by that I mean shitty and stressful. They say it's designed that way. Hell if I know why. Most of the previous week has felt like I've stayed in this dorm. Cleaning it, dusting it, polishing it. I'm hoping this next week of training I'll get to do something less repeditive. (I miss my PC and spellcheck)

I don't get any news from the outside world, so I'm curious if you help me out. If you could print out and send me a few recent tech/gaming articles then I'd be really grateful. Also the NFL standings. Lots of football fans in my flight who're wondering how their team is performing.

It's about 4am'ish right now. So I think I'll head back to bed to catch a few more minutes of sleep. Say hi to the peeps on IRC for me! (maybe you could also print out them saying hi and anything they have to say to me :3 )

    Laters,
    Josh

Lemme write something up for you boy.

Josh it's just not the same without you!
You missed out on things, quite a few...
Like that GBAtemp V3+ upgrade, a few weeks ago
It happened shortly after you left anyhow.
Shame you aren't here to see this,
But when you return, your pants, you will piss.

That's all I can come up with for now :creep:
As for tech & gaming news here's a few noteworthy things that have been keeping me hyped up lately:
    - big game releases such as Zelda Skyward sword, Metal Gear Solid HD collection, TES IV Skyrim, Mario Land 3D, Mario Kart 7... gonna be an awesome month of November! when are you going back home?
    - a new camera/picture technology called "Lytro" which lets you take "living pictures". Looking awesome, but it's hard to describe, you have to see it for yourself! Basically you take a photo, and then once it's on the computer you can click any part of the image to refocus it. Say if you had a blurry part in the background, click it and it'll focus on it and unblur it. Also it takes 3D pictures.
    - Random stuff: The lybian military killed Gadhaffi. Steve Jobs died. The PS3 is getting hacked some more. The 3DS is still the top selling console in Japan lately. Nintendo registered the "PokemonGray.com" domain apparently. iPhone 4S is out there but there's not much new over the iPhone 4 so people are disappointed, yet its still selling millions. Toyota announced that by 2015-2020 they'll be producing electric-powered cars that can go as far as 1000 kilometers (621 miles) without recharging, using some kind of dry battery new technology. That's about all I've got!

Basic training is designed to suck. Don't worry, you're not alone in this regard. On the bright side, it can only get better :)

Hey, josh! I hope all is well for you, I don't have much tech news at the moment besides sprint cutting back on the unlimited data plans they provide. Basically, all the plans that are unlimited are no longer unlimited except for smart phones. Also MIT has developed a new radar technology that can see through walls! Hope all is going well for you, I know it sucks having to go through training, but that's just a basic part of the military. Be strong and muscle through, we all know you can do it! All and all, just be safe and have a good time.

    Yours respectfully,
    -TLS/The Living shadow

Basic training really sucks -- I've been there. Everything from double timing it to mess at 5am, hours of drill in the hot sun with no shade in sight, and coming back to barracks only to be ambushed by your neighbours with their padlocks wrapped up in those bloody standard issue wool socks. There's no denying it's tough, but it starts the separation of the weak from the strong. If you survive it, it changes a lot of things about you -- your perception of yourself and what you're really capable of chief amongst them. I had nights where I would crawl over to the canteen, buy a chocolate bar, and just sit looking at the water (I did my basic training at CFB Borden in Canada.) wondering what the fuck I was doing, and why it was going so slow. Ultimately I did not pursue a career in that direction, but I am proud to have gone through and come out stronger on the other side.

You're going to get so much out of it though -- for example, you will never ever forget how to shine your boots, you're going to become a master at card games (assuming someone around you was smart enough to bring a few decks), and you're going to make some friends for life. Make sure you eat whenever you're given the opportunity, and sleep whenever you're given the opportunity -- and if it's anything like my day, always keep a combination lock wrapped in a sock under your pillow to prepare for random ambush beatings. :)

Stay well, and just keep thinking about the end. It'll come faster than you think.

    -Lily

Damn, when I went through training I'd never have been able to be awake at 4 AM... the moment we were allowed in our beds, I crashed, and wouldn't wake up until morning.

Are you using the brown or white towels for the bottom of your personal items drawer?

What squadron are you in? (I was in the 323rd.)

What's your job in the dorm? (I was a shoe aligner)

Are you going to attend services on Sunday, or use the time to rest? (I attended at first, but then used the time to rest in the later weeks.)

What's your favorite meal they serve?

Have you all set up dorm guard/watch duty yet?

    Hey Josh.
Greetings from the outside world, is not as nice here, is cold, smells like sh!t and they say next year, the chances of getting attacked by a polar bear will increase by at least 20%.
Oh, Gadaffi is dead remember him? Also, Hugo Chavez fought Cancer and won.
In some tech news, I can tell you the iPhone 4S launched and even thou everybody was disappointed, everybody rushed to get one. Siri seems to have some funny answers for questions like "I need to hide a dead body", bringing you nearby swamps, dams, rivers and stuff like that or "What is the best phone in the world", she says the one you are holding. In more mobile tech news, Google launched Android 4, same thing, only with face recognition.

Nintendo launched a video bulletin showing their Fall catalog, nothing new there, some downloadable games, Zelda, Mario Kart 7 and mario 3D, the whole sequence is Reggie talking to the camera with a white background; makes you mind wonder if Nintendo will ever have any fresh ideas in terms of marketing like Sony or M$, that is before you start falling sleep, the whole video is boring and kinda depressing.
Sony confirmed that the VITA will launch on Feb 2012, I am not sure if I will get the Wi-Fi or the 3G version yet, but it really is a must buy console.

Gaming wise, this is the biggest year in recent memory with so many great games coming out for all platforms, seriously, from Metal Gear Collection to Uncharted 3, Gears 3, Soul Calibur 5 (which they announced that Ezio from Assasin's Creed will be a playable character), Forza 4, Zelda, Mario 3DS, Skrym and many more, I feel like a seriously need to prostitute somebody from my household to be able to afford some of that. Oh and a remake of Grand Theft Auto for the iPhone and Android.

Anyway, I hope you are doing great man, please keep in touch, it was so nice to hear from you!
