Japanese 3DS worth the hassle? (and other questions)

@Takokeshi you were right. My *nands were somehow re-linked. Thanks for the call out!

Theory below but here’s proof of the last time I formatted my emunand:

I fixed it by:

  1. I removed 3DSBank, its configs and the copies of the Nintendo3DS folders (just moved them elsewhere in case I needed them for recovery or something….looks like not but safe vs sorry.)
  2. I reran TinyFormat and went through the initial setup again. My games and themes and everything were still intact so didn‘t hurt anything to do it again. :-)
  3. I did a quick install of Alien On The Run on my US Emunand and it correctly does NOT show up on my Japanese Sysnand. Whew!

Installed VC Mario vs Donkey Kong in Emunand

This time starting the VC game crashes my 3DS:

I think this is the VC GBA result @CoolMe was warning us about.

I confirmed Mario and Donkey Kong NOT show up in Sysnand Data Management.

As a test I installed Mario and Donkey Kong on Sysnand and it works great.

Played through 1 world (score of 28000 with 6 Marios as a marker)

image.jpg

Switched back to Emunand and now Mario and Donkey Kong works (installed on both *Nands and pointless…as predicted.)

And also as @CoolMe predicted my save game from Sysnand is there

image.jpg

same stats as above. Never played this game before on Emunand (or ever)

Soo, all that to say this…just walked through the proof that VC GBA games installed on Emunand are broken and actually play through Sysnand.

edit: and for the kicker? When I exited the game it dropped me into Japanese Sysnand. Myth confirmed.

Not blaming 3DSBank for my error BTW!
Wouldn’t be fair as I don’t think it was designed with Sys/Emu nand flippers in mind but I honestly don’t know that for a fact it was root cause right now. I’ll have to do more tests at a later date to see what’s going on underneath.

It's because those games are actually RF (region free) and contain all languages they support :)
I'm also in the Japanese 3DS crew, by the way. I use a Japanese New 3DS now and I love it.
Luma Locale Switcher helps when issues arise.

Really no need for a full region switch unless you *really* can't stand the Japanese menus.

Correct. Those games have all languages. I was able to change the Region settings in my Profile and all my games followed suit. My original plan was to stay in Japanese mode until I saw Ninty was closing down the eshop. The switch to US Emunand was just matter of convenience. I did a ton of work with my themes and badges on the Japanese side so I didn’t want to destroy how tough it looked by overwriting the Sysnand. I‘m very happy the tools were made available for me to keep it.

I have the smol n3DS. I like the form better, and the kisekae plates are kinda cool.
Just made sense to import one because the release in the US was pretty limited on this model and buying a used one from Japan was a lot cheaper than buying a much worse condition used one here.

I became interested and tried using a US emuNAND on mine, with some success, but I think being unable to use eShop or trying to fix it to work would be a big deal to me at the moment. I might switch to something like that after the eShop is offline for good, though.

I also just bought a japanese 3ds and I am thinking of changing the region. After reading through this thread it looks like the best way to do this is by changing the region of the emuNAND while leaving the sysNAND intact. I think that is what I would do. However, I am curious if there are any downsides in always running with the emuNAND. Is the SD card going to handle that sort of stress for a long time? Also if something happens to the SD card, will I be able to create a new emuNAND (with a new SD card) using the sysNAND again?
I just changed sysNAND because honestly I don't care about having access to the Japanese region.

Also, I forgot to tell everyone! My 3DS works great and I love the 3D effect! OOT looks so good in 3D, I can never go back.

Does anyone know how I can extract a save from a VC game? I bought Super Metroid on VC and I want to play my save on Snes9x.
