Welcome back to the 360 releases threads, several 2010 releases already happened but other forum members posted them as an when so I saw no need for these to appear (indeed the release that caused them to reappear will probably not be of great note). On the other hand the homebrew world seems to have been having a whale of a time so again the section will be more of a summary than a news section.
Long time readers might be pleased to know I have finally started on the reviews/list of big/important releases of the year thread I have been threatening for some time now.

Being a new year and having recently seen a fair few people join a quick paragraph to describe what happens here is probably in order.
GBAtemp is presently a Nintendo based site so the main focus of the portal and staff is towards Nintendo systems however we have more than a few members who like other consoles and those other consoles can be hacked in various ways. These threads aim to be quick summaries of the state of the 360, when they need to be they are daily (and those threads updated if necessary) but often nothing happens so some time can go between threads (the old threads are at the bottom of each new thread if you want to catch up or just see how things played out).
Realistically we can cover anything to do with the 360 but usually the focus is on the modding side of things, this includes

360 disc iso releases- this is the mainstay of the posts and the thing that gets them moving in the first place (if nothing happens here the other stuff will either be kicked to an individual thread or left for the next post). Any nuke information (see the last few sections of the thread for more on that) will also be included in the posts and likewise any confirmed games added to the 360 game verification tool ABGX360.
As we are an English speaking site we cover big releases (a short writeup/mini review if possible, release name, region locking information and NFO) in the main section while the smaller releases (those without English in and region dupes that do not add anything from the perspective of an English speaker- new content or new region compatibility) are usually covered with a link to the NFO a line on it if necessary although we will cover a big Japanese release on the rare occasions one happens (the 360 is not big in Japan so early Japanese releases and Japanese exclusives do not happen all that often).

The xbox live arcade (XBLA) releases- a new thing that appeared with the homebrew hacks from last year is the ability to run xbox live arcade games without needing to go through MS to get them.

homebrew news- emulators, media players, hack updates, rebooter app updates and other things like it.

modding news- will usually sit with homebrew news and indeed to try and separate them is near impossible, this includes things like new repair kits, controller mods, mod chips, microsoft responses to such developments (banning consoles from live happens and the hacker response) and most importantly hacked DVD drive firmware updates.

Homebrew can come from anywhere but with the iso releases and especially the XBLA releases our focus is on the "scene"- anything that ultimately originates from a p2p network will be mentioned in passing if it is a hotly anticipated release (indeed several releases in the last half of last year were first seen on p2p networks) but as anyone who has followed the 360 scene will be able to tell you the p2p 360 side of things frequently do not have a clue.

<u><b>Nukes</b></u>
No new nukes since last post (ABGX now lists 217) although it was covered in an extra post last time Venetica from group Damnation had this.

Venetica.PROPER.PAL.XBOX360-VATOS - no nuke reason given and "proof included" is the NFO for the VATOS release, I tracked down this proof and the one I found is just an image of the retail disc, case and a hand scribbled note. As far as I can see nobody has offered up a nuke for the DAMNATION release of the game either so carry on as you were.
I was also concerned that it might be German only and it looks like we are in the clear on that front as well.

<u><b>Homebrew</b></u>

Lots and lots of stuff has happened here in the last few months and even since last post.

First bannings, they have happened, they appear to be related to the firmware of the drive being detected (which should be sorted in an upcoming firmware but not with what exists) and have taken some functionality from the console in addition to live. Similarly those using the homebrew rebooter apps have also been hit with bans but if you are using homebrew the following does not really apply.

Several things can be done:
1) restore an old NAND backup from before the ban (but not so early as to be before efuses were blown). Requires you have a pre ban backup.
2) ground the write protect switch of the NAND (people usually stick a switch in too as writing is useful on occasion). Requires you do to it before you get banned.
3) Due to the way things work there are older secdata.bin files buried within the NAND. As they are already signed you can swap them around at will and some of these backups will be from when you could still use the hard drive installs and sign profiles for other machines.

Knowledge of all three is useful but in the case of 1 and 3 you will need the ability to backup the NAND. You can do this as part of homebrew although it should be noted that the hardware side of the JTAG hack (the part with diodes) is not necessary or even advised you do if you are only playing with previously signed data and your NAND (indeed if you have been banned in this latest wave your homebrew options are non existent) .
More here:
<a href="http://www.free60.org/Reading_out_NAND" target="_blank">http://www.free60.org/Reading_out_NAND</a>
There is a USB version available but it is quite expensive to pull off, search xbox hacker forums for it.

The initial hack required you to manually search the dump but there are now automated tools that can pull the relevant data and pretty much do everything but flash it back for you.
<a href="http://www.xboxhacker.net/index.php?topic=12759.msg87614#msg87614" target="_blank">http://www.xboxhacker.net/index.php?topic=...g87614#msg87614</a>

This brings us onto the subject of homebrew, the August the 11th 2009 update (if you have been banned this time around you will have done this) as well as consoles made from mid June 2009 onwards lose the ability to run homebrew. Those who can still run homebrew are set for a good time (basically if you encounter/have a homebrew capable 360 grab it/hang onto it as things are already very good), as a quick aside "waiting" for a new hack is not a wise idea.
For those of you still with homebrew capable consoles a tool was released over at <a href="http://x360.gx-mod.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=2355" target="_blank">http://x360.gx-mod.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=2355</a> that allows you to easily fiddle with keyvaults on your 360 to do things like region changing and drive key changing (this might be useful to "clone" a 360 for XBLA stuff).

Those who use homebrew 360s or are otherwise offline may want game updates, in which case see the last few lines of this homebrew section after the hard drive stuff.

So as to have all the functionality of the later kernels (and then some) homebrew capable consoles need to be running said kernel, long story short a straight flashed kernel can not be added but you can reboot into one (not that the end use will know otherwise). There are two rebooters and broadly speaking they have the same basic functionality
1) Freeboot
2) XBReboot

Freeboot is presently tied to a console with dual NAND (either by chip or so called XD card mod), XBReboot is now available for all? models and can be flashed to the original NAND. For those following outside these threads XBReboot had been accused of being less stable and indeed it was for a time but nowadays it is probably the leader of the two although large NAND 360s are still troublesome when updates come (a few people are experimenting with NAND replacement to shrink it down to 16 megs like most consoles but nothing has got that far just yet)

The list of hacks is extensive and looks set to grow but we have several options including
Unsigned code:
homebrew including game launching code. Region locking was kernel based that has long gone.
hacked games- indeed a surprising amount of work has already happened on this front.
xbox live arcade titles (remember the demo is a full game and only a single string change is needed to unlock it, there are tools to do it too)
Ability to use any size hard drive (not the specific hacked models the non homebrew consoles are tied to).

Once you are in a hacked kernel though there is not that much you can do right off the bat, fortunately there is something called "freexex" which acts somewhat like the dashboard replacements of the original xbox or the game launchers of the wii. In the last few days there has also been QuickBoot released which acts as something of a shortcut you can use inside a rebooter kernel to save having to launch freexex

Other homebrew has seen FanSpeedFlasher which does what it says on the tin
<a href="http://www.xbins.org/nfo.php?file=xboxnfo1767.nfo" target="_blank">http://www.xbins.org/nfo.php?file=xboxnfo1767.nfo</a>

A SNES emulator update or two:
<a href="http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EkykFEZuuyBaStvUyv.php" target="_blank">http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/Ek...uuyBaStvUyv.php</a>

Although we are not an original xbox thread there have also been a couple of homebrew updates to original xbox homebrew including Final Burn Legends (a CPS1, CPS2 and megadrive emulator (NFO includes old updates and intro to the app):
<a href="http://www.xbins.org/nfo.php?file=xboxnfo1768.nfo" target="_blank">http://www.xbins.org/nfo.php?file=xboxnfo1768.nfo</a>

Also a port of biniax ( <a href="http://www.biniax.com" target="_blank">http://www.biniax.com</a> )
<a href="http://www.xbins.org/nfo.php?file=xboxnfo1763.nfo" target="_blank">http://www.xbins.org/nfo.php?file=xboxnfo1763.nfo</a>

<u>Hacked drives</u>
The hacked drive firmwares (once again available to all known drives) also saw a great deal of development.

For those just joining us there are many 360 drives but for the last couple of years the only drive has been the liteon drive although there has been a couple of revisions of it.
There are known as the 7 series, the 8 v1, 8v2 and 9 series.
We do have a universal hack now (more on that in a second) but before that there was
7 series: needed to take the back off and use a probe (a simple device you can make or buy)
8 v1: can be done with nothing more than a compatible sata chipset.
8 v2: needs to use universal hack
9 series: needs to use universal hack.

That hack that I just dubbed universal uses a method derived from the so called lifted pin hack that tricks the drive into being able to dump the entire firmware including the keys to the drive that are contained within. As the words "lifted pin" imply it is a hardware level hack which is considerably more complex than older drive hacks (although nothing special to someone versed in hardware modding, in related news Team Xecuter have also made simple and somewhat inexpensive PCBs to do this universal hack.
As a quick aside the 7 series and 8 v1 methods only dump keys and other necessary data rather than the whole firmware which made "unflashing" impossible but with the universal method appearing the full firmwares have also appeared making it now possible for anyone to do.

However the real developments concern the hacked firmwares themselves. This will be presented in report form so people can make sense of what happened and hopefully prepare themselves for future developments.

Microsoft occasionally varies the format of the 360 disc layout (and so the iso that results from it) and in an attempt to keep you from being banned the older hacked firmwares would check to make sure the discs complied with what was known. Changes to this layout became known as waves for whatever reason and a few weeks into the Autumn/Winter release schedule another wave hit (waves 4 and 5 in this case) which made the hacked firmwares not accept the games.

There are 4 main drive types although there are sub types and revisions among them.
Hitachi
Samsung
Benq
Liteon

Hitachi never got a version of iextreme 1.6 but that did not matter as the checks in 1.51 did not trigger for the drive although the same could not be said of the other 1.51 versions for different drives.
Samsung and Benq got a version of iextreme dubbed 1.61 which was updated to work with the wave 4 and 5 games. Others also went to even earlier firmwares without the checks.
Liteon was however stuck with 1.6 and no pre check firmware- two ways to get it to work here. One was to use a disc that came bundled with the firmware every time you wanted to launch the game and the other was to patch a game to an earlier wave thus dodging the checks. Patching works but even if you are not using a drive on live we suggest you never do it (part of the checks that did/do exist check to make sure a wave matches the date on the disc which wave patching breaks), if you do use live it is an easily detected way of getting you banned.

-note that you can spoof older drives to appear as different models and indeed many did that-

For those wondering why liteon did not get 1.61 as quickly as the other drives the banning wave (nothing to do with disc wave) for Winter 2009 hit shortly after 1.61 was released, with no games or methodology in common it quickly became apparent that the hacked firmware if not being detectable in a traditional sense could be inferred in some manner (to this day the method has not be disclosed) and thus using a hacked drive on live was no longer safe. This caused a whole rewrite of the hacked DVD firmware (the so called lite touch aka LT firmware) but bugs, drama and whatever else means this has not been seen by the public yet.

As a historical note a hacked version of iextreme 1.6 for the liteon 83xxxxx v2 and 9 series appeared shortly after the universal method mentioned above was disclosed meaning all drives were once again hackable. This has been succeeded by new developed discussed in a moment though.

Boxing day (26th of December 2009) saw the release of a hacked version of 1.6 dubbed iXtreme v1.6 Non-Stealth for everything that has a 1.6 release (everything but the hitachi which as already mentioned does not matter here) that was hacked to always think the activate.iso had been used and most importantly bypass the checks.
A few days after that a true liteon 1.61 for all drive models appeared but as both would see you banned the hacked 1.6 is the one we suggest people use as it is more futureproof.

As a quick aside I (FAST6191) have been known to post in a few threads on the subject of 360 hacking and part of that was to answer the question- can I use a PC drive in my 360? to which I would usually answer along the lines of "some have made drives work but it was not released", this was wrong but it was never spread that far and it does require extensive knowledge, time and specific (rare) hardware which means it is still probably easier and cheaper to source an official drive from somewhere else. Still you can read about it on <a href="http://www.xboxhacker.net/index.php?topic=8335.80" target="_blank">http://www.xboxhacker.net/index.php?topic=8335.80</a>

To go with these hacked firmwares Jungleflasher was updated <a href="http://jungleflasher.net/downloads.html" target="_blank">http://jungleflasher.net/downloads.html</a> although you may need to use firmtool (available on xbins) to make the hacked firmware as it may not play well with the 1.6 hacked versions.

Finally just to make it a proper roundup, it was mentioned in passing back in the rebooter app section but a few weeks back the 250 gig HDDSS.bin file was released allowing you to make 250 gig hard drives for about the price of a 120 gig official one, these will work in all 360s though and not just the homebrew ones.
It also saw the return of interest in the tools to play with 360 hard drives and the guides surrounding it. We have now also seen some of the game updates get bundled and released to the scene (more in the releases section), the main tool of choice is xplorer360:
<a href="http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox360-tools/Xplorer360.php" target="_blank">http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox360-tools/Xplorer360.php</a>

Along with the bans and these tools came methods to add updates to 360s that would otherwise not be seen until GOTY editions of games (sometimes not even then) and as consoles seem to have gained the release now patch later mentality previously only seen on the PC (games shipping with serious bugs) this can be quite troublesome for those without xbox live abilities.
Several things happened here including
Scene bundles of patches:
<a href="http://www.ludibria.com/nfo.php?sys=x36&sysid=1984" target="_blank">http://www.ludibria.com/nfo.php?sys=x36&sysid=1984</a>
<a href="http://www.ludibria.com/nfo.php?sys=x36&sysid=1981" target="_blank">http://www.ludibria.com/nfo.php?sys=x36&sysid=1981</a>
Web based frontends:
<a href="http://xboxupdates.24.tl/" target="_blank">http://xboxupdates.24.tl/</a>
And the usual array of forum posts and other nonsense. Naturally it requires hard drive access (the NFOs linked there include many methods) which is not all that difficult really. We have debated adding updates like these to the posts and it may happen... it is going to be one of those time will tell things.

Sadly there is not mandatory changelog for live updates but sometimes developers/publishers release them and some can be inferred from their PS3 and PC counterparts (although that is a decidedly more unreliable strategy). Updates are inclusive/cumulative so no need to download #1 and then #2 and then #3- you can just download a single file.
Note however that system link users (available to banned and still crippled users too and indeed some work has been done on system link over VPN and similar) often need the same version and downloadable content tends to require the latest version as well.

<b>Additions to ABGX360</b>
We suggest you use the link below and the abgx360 tool as the site does not use scene naming meaning it can be quite hard to tell entries apart, this is just for reference really (RF= region free)
ABGX360 ( <a href="http://abgx360.net/verified.php" target="_blank">Web frontend to verified database</a> ) added surprisingly few games:

Bayonetta RF (3rd Wave)
Darksiders RF (4th Wave)
Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5 RF (4th Wave)
Scene It? Bright Lights! Big Screen! PAL (4th Wave)
Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore NTSC/U (2nd Wave)

<!--sizeo:5--><span style="font-size:18pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><b>Releases</b><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

Release dates can be found here: <a href="http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/" target="_blank">http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/</a> although the dates on gamefaqs seem to be slightly "off" and as usual are subject to change at the last moment.
Releases will start for the year today or tomorrow- Army of Two: The 40th Day probably being the first release although having played the ps3 demo I would not be expecting much.

The year/the time since last post has already seen a few releases but those were taken care of by other forum members. <b>Bayonetta.PAL.XBOX360-SWAG</b> in <a href="http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=196150" target="_blank">http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=196150</a> thanks to biscuitbee and <b>Darksiders_XBOX360-STRANGE</b> ( <a href="http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=199875" target="_blank">http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=199875</a> ) thanks to 360 releases posts old hand Thug4L1f3 (which will be mentioned in this post unlike Bayonetta which was mentioned in the last post).

As an aside if possible the NFOs are being sent as unicode/some encoding that will not lose the format if possible which means we may not lose the ASCII art any more (I am far too lazy to make up picture NFOs not to mention I like text), for old ones perhaps <a href="http://shailendra88.blogspot.com/2009/02/how-to-view-nfo-files-in-firefox.html" target="_blank">http://shailendra88.blogspot.com/2009/02/h...in-firefox.html</a> is of some use.

For the new members the general layout of each game here is
Scene release name (in bold)
Region locking information (rebooter apps can dodge region protection but they are far from available to all so such things are staying)
In previous posts wave information (if known) which is not necessary now everything can run every known game and as such will not be appearing any more.
A short writeup of the game (who made developed/published it, past history of the franchise, if I or one of mine has played it then a quick review). We invite others to comment on games and they frequently do so read their replies as there are many games/genres/franchises and so on I do not care for.
NFO in spoilers and codebox.

In order of most recent to pre:

<b>Vancouver.2010.XBOX360-GLoBAL</b>

A sports game from well established developers Eurocom Entertainment, their previous titles have mainly been sports games, sequels, ports to odd consoles and film tie ins although those games have seen some fairly well liked games (indeed they were apparently responsible for the console versions of James Bond 007: Nightfire, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy and Spyro: A Hero's Tail), you can read their profile as well as I though <a href="http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/eurocom-entertainment-software/" target="_blank">http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games/euro...nment-software/</a>

<b>Darksiders_XBOX360-STRANGE</b>

It was already posted over at <a href="http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=199875" target="_blank">http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=199875</a> and a fair bit of discussion had on it, I have yet to get around to playing it though. Some disparity between critics and the public and indeed even within their own camps as to whether it is good or not but with little else being released until the end of the month and Christmas coming decidedly early last year you could probably do with another game to play.

<b>Konami_Classics_Volume_2_USA_XBOX360-ZRY</b> and <b>Konami.Classics.Volume.1.USA-XBOX360</b>
Region locked US only according to the NFOs.

I merged the individual releases as they are so closely related.
Basic idea is Konami release XBLA versions of their old games (with some enhancements and modes apparently- nothing anyone who has seen a decent emulator in the last 10 years has not seen) and then sets about releasing them on discs as well which is fair enough.
Vol 1 includes
Super Contra
Frogger
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Vol 2 includes
Contra
Track & Field
Rush n' attack

This section aims to serve as quick intro to things that are often assumed elsewhere in these threads, it is never going to be a definitive guide so do not consider it as such.

First the current WIP GBAtemp 360 FAQ (not the same one that is stickied), it should cover most questions you might have on the 360 although it too is looking a bit out of date right now:
<a href="http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=157263" target="_blank">http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=157263</a>
For drive hacking related questions the jungleflasher tutorial is probably the most up to date guide:
<a href="http://jungleflasher.net/downloads.html" target="_blank">http://jungleflasher.net/downloads.html</a>

<b>XBOX360.Release.Standards.2007.v1.340</b>
<a href="http://pix.gbatemp.net/32303/XBOX360.Release.Standards.2007.v1.340.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://pix.gbatemp.net/32303/XBOX360.Release.Standards.2007.v1.340.png.tn.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>
Click on the image and it will load up the full picture.
Some sections of the scene also use the general console release standards as well as the 360 ones.

As many of you know modding your xbox can lead to a ban from xbox live (more or less the only recourse Microsoft have), we do not know the exact methods used to detect modding but it is a fair guess that it is related to the games not appearing as originals for various reasons although the last few months have seen this opinion shift to MS being able to detect the hacked firmware by some method- nothing is safe right now and there are no "workarounds" other than having a "live only" 360.
While playing games prior to street dates has been considered and indeed as of mid October 2009 MS have been seen to be targeting those who have as yet "unreleased" games on their profiles it is still somewhat up in the air.

On the other hand prerelease games (especially those from p2p groups) can sometimes be bad dumps, dumps from non retail sources, bad packing of dumps like any other dump but without a retail copy it is markedly difficult to verify a release beyond the basics. The tool AGBX360 is used to verify isos, directories and games burned to disc and can fix isos and directories if necessary but requires this data (a basic check using the data the game holds is still possible though).
Those who do not care about being banned from live or are willing to risk it then not much need to worry unless otherwise mentioned (as an example the first leaks of Halo 3 ODST were bad which meant while they would run a good chunk of gameplay was missing).

Little bits of 360 release history will be covered from time to time but if you want to delve into the substantial back catalogue of games for the 360 then
<a href="http://www.abgx.net/filename/?ch=6" target="_blank">http://www.abgx.net/filename/?ch=6</a> has release names and a great deal of info.
Another site that is also very useful is (they are frequently a source of the NFOs posted with these releases)
<a href="http://www.ludibria.com" target="_blank">http://www.ludibria.com</a>
Other sites with useful tools and info are
<a href="http://abgx360.net/" target="_blank">http://abgx360.net/</a> (the homepage for a tool to verify and fix games, once a game is added to their database a more thorough check can be performed).
<a href="http://www.xbins.org/" target="_blank">http://www.xbins.org/</a> the web frontend to an FTP site dedicated to homebrew for the original xbox and 360, easyxbins is a nice tool to access the FTP site ( <a href="http://www.360mods.net/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=29" target="_blank">http://www.360mods.net/index.php?name=Down...tails&id=29</a> )
We will leave info on how to flash xboxes for games and/or homebrew to other threads as it occasionally moves fast and is better left to them.

The 360 supports region locking leaving it to developers and publishers to choose what is done (other than German releases what will be done is very unpredictable).
Those without a homebrew enabled 360 (those with one can change the region or more commonly use a rebooter app to disable checking) will find region locking is not able to be bypassed on the 360.
There is no great worry unless you are sporting a Japanese 360 (English language games are often region locked out and Japanese xbox games can take months to appear) as game releases usually fall very close together region wise these days. Close together means usually within a week and this still usually means before street dates in respective countries.

It has not come up here but it has in other places (including some rather interesting nuke wars on the scene); region free is region free and it does not matter what territory the game that was ripped comes from so if there is a region free NTSC sourced release and you are in a PAL country do not wait on a PAL release unless you are waiting for a given language as it will not happen (and if it does scene rules tend to mean the release is nuked), similarly we are going to shift to just stating the regions a game is locked to rather than sources to try and eliminate some confusion unless it is unknown at the time of posting.
There are four regions as far as the 360 is concerned being Japan (NTSC-J), USA (NTSC-U), Europe (PAL) and China (NTSC-C), Australia counts as PAL and anyone anywhere else in the world will probably have an imported 360 so I will leave that to the owners to figure out. China and Japan usually overlap along with the rest of Asia but not always (there are not all that many Chinese releases anyhow).
It is incredibly rare but occasionally releases can vary by region, it is mainly a licensing (think music games) or data thing (big games may forgo a language) or even have multiple languages per "area" (Canadian area releases may have French and English while US releases may have Spanish and English).

As mentioned there is now a homebrew method that works on newer model consoles (previous ones would only work on consoles without HDMI) provided you have not done the August 11th 2009 update or any subsequent ones or your 360 was not made after mid June 2009 (we still do not have definitive cutoff dates so if it is a choice between May and June go with May). Many versions of Xell (the homebrew loader) have now been compiled so most 360 models are now hackable. If you have updated you are out of luck as a fuse will have been blown.

There are two main options being considered:
1) Flashing a different region code- unless you have a dual nand chip (one region on each) this is a fairly long winded process but it does work.
If you can ignore the text speak xbox scene has a guide (we suggest you use it as a rough guide to understand what is going on):
<a href="http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=693753" target="_blank">http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=693753</a>
Also <a href="http://x360.gx-mod.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=2355" target="_blank">http://x360.gx-mod.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=2355</a>

If you should manage to have your motherboard/cpu key and provided you do not downgrade then you should even be able to do it on a post august the 11th xbox, this is probably a very small subset of people but if you were hanging on with the intention of doing this sort of thing you might be in luck.
Chip development (NAND chips this is) and replacement via XD card is also progressing once again.

2) A "rebooter" app- The general idea is to (soft) reboot into a custom kernel/similar which handily ignores things like region checking.
In late November/early December 2009 some tools appeared and they were quite developed at that.
They are called xbreboot and freeboot, development is happening quickly so please consult <a href="http://www.xbins.org/" target="_blank">http://www.xbins.org/</a> xbox-scene or the forums here for more up to date news. At present they can be considered fully functional.

A handful of 360 homebrew sites and guides exist (our own forums are also filled with knowledgeable people too) so for the curious
<a href="http://www.free60.org/wiki/Main_Page" target="_blank">Free60 (the base of the current homebrew work)</a>
<a href="http://www.eurasia.nu/wiki/index.php?pagename=Free60JtagHack" target="_blank">Euraisa writeup of the new hack and how it works</a>
<a href="http://www.xboxhacker.net" target="_blank">Xboxhacker.net (forums frequented by the Free60 crew and many others)</a>
Any discussion on those sites will be of a highly technical nature and a similar level of knowledge/ability is expected of you if you decide to join in.

New to this section is a short note on wave 4 and beyond,
Wave 4 (and wave 5) which has workarounds available is upon us, see wave 4 thread for more: <a href="http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=185528" target="_blank">http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=185528</a>
While wave 4 is now nearly certain in a release there are the odd handful of games slipping through the cracks.

What wave a 360 release is presently does not matter as every known drive has a hacked firmware that supports all present waves. We still do not suggest you patch isos though.

Banning thread thread here:
<a href="http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=188345&st=0&start=0" target="_blank">http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=188...t=0&start=0</a>
Some people have taken to trying to see if they have been banned by starting a recall order, if it fails a ban is probably to come shortly after.
Good news is that if you restore a NAND dump from before the ban your hard drive abilities will return for the most part and everyone should now have the ability to do such a thing (you can backup NAND regardless of kernel but be careful if you update and try to restore an old backup as fuses might have been blown and the 360 will fail to boot), MS have also left old copies of data in the NAND so you can dump the NAND and restore an older secdata.bin.
It might have been mentioned in passing but there is also a relatively simple hardware tweak you can do but be prepared to reverse it in months to come.

Lagartija apparently just dropped
"Army.of.Two.The.40th.Day.RF.MULTi.5.XBOX360-Lagartija"

Lagartija's previous two releases have been nuked for being p2p repacks (a scene rule rather than a technical one but of all the "make life nice" scene rules it would be the one I am most inclined to observe) and the demo I played on the PS3 did not enthuse much beyond it being co-op.

I can not find an NFO I am able to link up here just yet either (the only one I have are pictures or those that will lose the ASCII art) but will edit this as and when I do find one.

The relevant info from it though:

My God, why can't every console/handheld have this kind of quality posts? I don't even 360 mod (yet!), but this was one heck a great read. Bravo to you.
