I've already got the SD card, and I want to prepare it ahead of time. I'm sure I'll need to update the firmware, and I'd like to know what basic files to download (especially those for running homebrew, as I'm planning on creating some of my own) as well as the file hierarchy to use. I hope you guys can help.

Wood is the OS, it comes as a base file or two, and an _rpg folder. Drop them in the root as they come inside the download. The cheat database and skins and such are in the /_rpg/ directory for when you want to replace/add.

As for firmware updates, they're distributed as .NDS ROMs, drop them wherever you put games (pretty much anywhere other than /_rpg/), just make a ROMs folder in the root or whatever and run them like you would games. Wood and most homebrews can navigate just fine, I have my crap in !GAMES (exclamation point so it shows up at the top of lists), and that further sorted into !ROMS, !HOMEBREW, and whatever else.

I finally got it, but it won't let me update. I've been trying to run "R4iGold_3DS45_NDSi145_Patcha_NDSi.nds" but it always fails when I press A to update.
    Warning: Spoilers inside!

What's the hardware revision? It'll be a letter or number above one of the pins on the back, printed on the PCB (still in-sight without taking it apart). Also what icon does it show itself as?

"C". If by "icon" you mean the banner that shows up when I stick the card in, it's half of a stupid looking asian guy with his arms in the air.

It's on the latest already then, it looks like. 5.x hasn't done any additional blocking over 4.5.x.
