Hi! I'm having the same problem. USB Loader GX doesn't boot games. When I select them, screen goes black and after 3 - 4 seconds Homebrew Channel appear. I freshly rehacked my Wii yesterday and I'm 100% sure I followed every step of the guide. Can someone check my syscheck please?

I checked the second port too after the first one but it's the same problem. I'm using 2 USB flash drives 2.0 (8 and 16Gb). They both used to work fine a year before. I haven't used my Wii since a year.

Did you have updated your USBLoader GX to v3.0 r1272 ?
If yes you can try an older Release (1271 or 1268) from here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/usbloadergx/files/Releases/New revisions (3.0+)/

You can also maybe try to change your Loader´s IOS (Settings - Loader Settings - Loader´s IOS)
Try 58 if it is set to 249 and/or Counterwise please.

But to point out,USB Sticks/Flash Drives/Thumb Drives and this Kind are known not to work reliable and fail with Time.
You said they worked before so maybe this is the Issue.:(

Good Luck and
Thank you.:)

Hi, I'm having exactly the same issue.

Previously working vWii, UsbLoader GX v3.0 1272. d2x-v10beta52 loaded into 249,250. WD External USB Drive.

Also tried WiiFlow, same issue. Nintendont still working so GC games only at the moment.

I'll also try previous version of USB Loader GX and report back.

Swapped the USB port I was using and I'm working now.

I think this is because the USB loader is now using iOS.58 which can detect the HDD on any USB port, but when running games will use the USB port that is configured in the HardDrive settings in the usb loader gx settings. I will have a play to understand this Better !

Thanks all!

This is exactly the reason why :)
glad you understood it.

if you want, you can try to change the IOS used by the loader's interface back to 249 or 250, instead of 58.
that way you'll see right at boot if this is the correct port.

I made the loader use 58 because a lot of new device needs it to properly initialize, but it can be a problem in that case as both ports are working while inside the loader, not when playing wii games.

Loader's interface use "Loader's IOS" slot (init the drive, access USB, access NAND, dump disc, etc.)
Wii games use the "game's IOS" slot from the settings, and based on what's installed in the selected slot:
cIOS d2x up to v10 are only compatible with USB Port0.
Hermes cIOS (222-223-224) are compatible with both USB Ports, but not working with emuNAND.
d2x v10-alt is compatible with both USB Port, but is beta, and has looot of problem. Please, don't use it.

Game's IOS require cIOS to redirect "disc access to USB wbfs file".
while inside the loader, there's no need to redirect disc access, so either cIOS or official unpatched IOS58 works too.
I suspect IOS58 contains a different USB module version not present in cIOS. so some new HDD works and init properly only with that IOS58 module, using cIOS with new HDD freeze on the 20sec detection screen and go to "channel mode without USB device detected".
I hope new cIOS developer (leseratte) will find a way to properly initialize new devices so IOS58 is not needed which is too confusing.

I'm having the same issue, modded the system a couple of years ago but around after two weeks of it working properly usb loader gx stopped recognizing my hdd. I've been using it for emulators and Nintendon't since then (for some reason gc games only launch when using port 1) but recently I've tried to get wii games running again. I was able to get the games to show up on the loader by switching to IOS 58 but when I try to launch wii games it takes me back to the system menu (again, I can run gamecube games from usb loader gx only if it's set to port 1, if I try to do it from port 0 the screen just freezes black). I have a Toshiba 1TB hdd but I've also tried with a 4gb flash drive formatted in all different ways (fat32, wbfsm, etc.) just to make sure this wasn't the problem and it was still a no go. Here is my syscheck since I definitely don't know much about this and may have made some mistakes when installing the cios:

After reading through this post I tried to switch to port 1 in the settings but I get the message: “USB port changing is only supported on Hermes cIOS”. I don’t understand what this means and I believe it’s something related to the latest version of usb loader gx allowing both ports since in previous versions I could change it. Is there anything that I’m missing? Do I need to have anything installed for IOS36 or 222 or what steps can I take to get it to work? Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Your syscheck report is correct.

What is the version of your loader (usb loader gx) ??

launch usb loader gx via the homebrew channel or via the wii (Forwader) menu ??

An advice :
always leave the SD card in the wii, when you play or other things (in order not to lose it)

By testing with the following loaders ==> Configurable loader v70 or wiiflow, is it the same?

I’m using r1272, but I’ve also tried r1271 and 1268 and I was getting the same results. I’ve also tried both launching the loader through a forwader in the system menu and through the homebrew channel but it didn’t make any difference. Thanks for the advice on the SD card One thing I have noticed is that for some reason when I run usbloader gx from my hdd in versions previous to 72 the settings don’t save when you exit. This is why I couldn’t get my games to show, because the loader ios was always resetting back to 249 instead of 58. However, it seems that the latest revision has fixed that and it’ll overwrite the settings using the hdd. I haven’t tried it with either wiiflow or cfg loader because I’ve never been able to configure either application properly but I’ll have another go at it and report back.

use "wii backup manager" to manage your games on your external hard drive.(wii backup manager will place your games correctly on the hard drive).

Do not copy, paste your games directly to the hard drive (this may not work with your loader)

Yes, I used Wii Backup Manager when I added the games to the hdd a while back so they are converted from iso to wbsf correctly, and they are placed properly in the wbsf folder in the root of the hdd. It's strange as mentioned above, because originally when I modded it a few years ago I must have done everything properly since wii games where loading fine for about two weeks before it just stopped recognizing the hdd (although it still works for everything else; nintendon't, emulators, etc.). And now that I've managed to get it to detect it with ios58, I get kicked back the system menu...

I was able to get the games to show up on the loader by switching to IOS 58 but when I try to launch wii games it takes me back to the system menu (again, I can run gamecube games from usb loader gx only if it's set to port 1, if I try to do it from port 0 the screen just freezes black).
this is strange.

Usually, listing games when using 58 should work on both ports.
and gamecube games should also work on both ports.
Did you try to launch nintendont directly from HBC to see if it had the same issue where only port1 is working?

you seem to know what port0/1 are, but the "reboot to system" is a symptom of "game not found", which happen either with :
- wrong usb port (be sure so use port0, the bottom one on Wii, back-top on WiiU)
- cIOS not installed, therefore losing the disc redirection to USB (doesn't seems the case based on your syscheck, but be sure your loder's setting has Game's IOS set to either 249 or 250)
- device not compatible with cIOS d2x v10 (it can happen. did you recently update, or used that cIOS version when it still worked fine years ago?). You can try to revert to d2x v8.

For "quick test" without replacing your cIOS, you already have 2 slots with v8 :
248 contains v8 base55 : I have really no idea how much compatibility this base has with games!
251 contains v8 base58 : this one has a very low compatibility with games, but a very good one with problematic drive detection. so this is a win/lose situation.
therefore I would suggest to first try to change Game's IOS AND loader's IOS setting to 248, see if HDD is detected inside USBGX interface. if it works with 248 base55 that's progress!
if not, it might require "base58". try 251 instead, which will work because it's "58", but lot of games will freeze or blackscreen.
being 58, it won't tell us if the issue is really d2x v8/v10 or not.
you might have to replace slot249/250 with v8 and try properly with base 56 or 57.

but before editing the system for nothing, I'm curious about the slot248 with base55.
editing a setting in the loader is faster than reinstalling the cIOS (unless he already has that/my installer full pack setup on his SD card with all version)

Also, using IOS58 should work in both USB Port, and therefore it seems unrelated to cIOS at all. Hence why I asked about other homebrew with port0. maybe his port is dead? is that possible?
if that's the case, then using v10-alt to allow port1 will be another solution, but with all problems it involves.
sometime hermes is not a bad idea :P

but let's do things in order and wait for each reports before trying something else.

Okay so I'll go by steps:
- When launching Nintendont directly from the HBC I can only run gamecube games from port 1 (if the hdd is plugged to port 0, the list of games still appears but when I launch one the hdd light continues blinking and I just get a frozen black screen forcing me to shut off the system). This works exactly the same when I run gc games from usbloader gx.
- Pretty much the first thing that I did when looking for solutions in this post a few days ago is try any different combinations of d2x8 and d2x10 for both 249 and 250 and their corresponding bases but it still wouldn't work.
- Following Cyan's advice I've now tried changing the game IOS to 248 or 251 but still nothing. And when I change the loader IOS to anything that is not 58 it doesn't recognize the hdd. However, the way that usbloader gx and my hdd interact is extremely strange. With r1272 it'll save any changes I make most of the times but not always (with previous versions it never saves it). Sometimes it'll only save the settings when I exit to the HBC instead of the wii menu. It's bizarre because it's extremely inconsistent. Also now when booting up usbloader gx I was sometimes getting the message the hdd wasn't there (the 20 sec countdown) but then proceeded to "patching ios58" and recognizing it just fine (this while in ios58) something that normally didn't happen.
- Regarding port 0 being dead, I'm not sure what it means but the hdd does power on fine from there with the light on and I can run emulators and roms from there as well.

Cyan from the 3 reasons you gave on why it kicks me back to the system menu (I've actually noticed that sometimes it sends to HBC instead) does that mean that it can have nothing to do with the wbfs files being corrupt? I'm certain that they're not but just to rule that out and avoid wasting time on redownloading them.

If the problem is with my hdd I'd be willing to get another (I believe I read from Cyan before that Toshiba are the least reliable and WD the best) but first I would like to make sure that that is the problem. My Toshiba 1tb is formatted to Fat32. I have a 4gb SanDisk usb stick which I've tested it with one game in all three formats (fat32, wbfs, and ntfs) but had the same kicking me back issue. Lastly I have a 4gb sd card where I've also tried putting one game but I don't know how to get ubs loader gx to read it instead of usb.

Sorry for these long posts, I really appreciate you guys being patient and helping me out :)

You say you can run emulator and roms from port 0?
but just not gamecube games when launching nintendont from HBC ?
nintendont is just a homebrew using IOS58 like any other emulators or apps.

it's really inconsistent.

part of what you said made me think it's USB port issue (not working with nintendont on port 0 either)
part of what you said made it looks like port0 work and it could be a HDD issue (port 0 works with emulators)
and that both when using IOS58, so no cIOS involved.

Return to menu (or hbc) could be corrupted ISO, but that would either launch and freeze/black screen if the file is found instead of exiting to menu.
it would exit to menu only if the very start of the ISO is unreadable and the console thinks it can't loads it.
so, yeah, unlikely but it's possible too.

I'm more thinking it's a HDD compatibility issue than ISO/dump problem as you have more physical problems like specific port, or different behavior with different base IOS.

I'd recommend trying another HDD. you said you had flashdrives, but these are not the best to do "alternate tests" to debug an issue as they are themselves common issues. flashdrives are known to have all the same problem you encountered. only another real external HDD would help to check if it's your drive having issues.

That's right about toshiba, I noticed reports from different users that these HDD have the same compatibility issue than the flashdrives. the few I helped said they sent it back and bought a WD instead and fixed their problem right away.

For the SD card :
use an USB sd card adapter ! plug it in port 0.

The main issue with flashdrive is not the "flash" but the USB interface they use.
Some SD adapters can work just fine with (mico)SDCard plugged in USB Port0 :)
again, not the best 100% definitive answer as it could be another non compatible device (you really don't have any chance if no USB device work).

that's the only idea I can give you for now if you can't test another HDD without buying one.

Don't worry about post length! mine are always worse haha

edit:
oh, I forgot to talk about your saving problem.
another strange one. are you using SD card (in SD slot) to store USBloaderGX apps?
ALWAYS use SD card for homebrew, and HDD only for ISO/ROM.
having the apps on USB is really not recommended for that reason, USB is often disconnected (on purpose or not). For example, USBGX disconnect USB before launching a game to pass the hand to cIOS to remount it. it should save the config before that, but it's just saying that USB are not the best place to store homebrew.
always use an SD card for all apps, settings, themes, covers, cheats, etc.

if it can't save at exit, or at all ... hey maybe it's an SD card issue ?
SD card could be the problem here !
if it can't save the settings, it can't launch the game (black screen yes. unsure about reboot?)
if the SD is write protected, settings are not saved, but also the loader lags and crashes while using it.
Nintendont needs sd access if the games are on SD, to store settings
verify the "lock" is in place on your SD (or adapter), try another one.

it shouldn't explain why IOS58 works randomly or only with port1 though, it's just trying to remove all possible actors.

So after extensive trial and error I'm almost certain that it's a port 0 issue.

Great advice when it comes to using the sd to usb converter, I had one lying around and hadn't thought to use it.
So I put a 16gb microsd into the converter and usbloader gx recognized it but once again sent me back to the system menu after running a game. usbloadergx recognizes all three usb devices that I've tried (the hdd, the 4gb flash drive and sd to usb) but all give me the same problem.

My next step was to test using cfg loader and wiiflow. Neither of them would even recognize the USB devices.
I was about to give up at that moment, but then I realized I had a microsd to sd converter too. For some reason I was under the impression that the wii would only read regular old sd cards but not micro ones, but I still gave it a try. And sure enough wiiflow detected the games on the sd card and ran them just fine. This issue has been nagging in the back of my head for some
time now, so you can imagine my feeling when metroid prime trilogy booted up. I tried with a few other games and they worked to.

This leads me to conclude that the issue is not with the wbfs files or with the cios.

The issue could be the usb devices, but it's more unlikely since I'm using three different ones (even if they're not the most reliable), and the work fine from port 1.

I put my focus on port 0, then I started remembering how the wii worked when I first modded it. I remember being able to launch gc games through Nintendont from port 0 in the past until one day it stopped working and I was forced to change to port 1.
Also I remember the emulators running a little faster when I first modded the wii as well. I use the cover mod emulators for nes, snes, gba etc. and even though they work great, when I'm looking for games quickly it'll take 3-4 secs to load the covers,
and the same when I launch or close them. So I tested it like this: when my hdd is on port 0 I have this 3-4 seconds delay (I've never had any problem during gameplay though). But when launch the emulators with the hdd in port 1, everything loads instantly.

So the conclusion that I've come to is that my port 0 is working either slower or weaker than port 1: just enough that I can use emulators and usbloader gx recognizes it, but not enough to power either things.

Now I have no idea how this is possible and I don't understand much about hardware, but my ideas are this:
- Port 0 is not receiving enough power. I didn't mention it earlier but I'm using a USA wii in Europe with the European power cord. But this has never given me any issues and it wouldn't explain why port 1 works fine (unless they receive power in a different way) or why it initially worked perfectly those two first weeks.
- Port 0 is slightly damaged. I've taken really good care of the system and I looked at the ports with a flashlight and they look brand new and don't seem bent or to have any dust. But maybe from plugging and unplugging usb devices I could have damaged it? (I do it pretty carefully)

If it's the second case I'm not sure what I can do. I was thinking about trying to clean the port with a q-tip and ipa, but I'm not very confident doing that and I don't think it would make a difference.

So for now I'm stuck with the microsd 16gb for wii games on wiiflow and the hdd plugged into port 1 for emulators and nintendont.
When I was doing some research I read that the wii can actually support up to 32gb microsd so I might go for one of those.
Since usbloader gx has "usb" in the title, I'm assuming there is not way to get it to run games from the sd card slot no?
I'm not too unhappy with setup (even though I much prefer the usbloader gx interface) and I'm definitely happy to be able to play wii games, but let me know if you have any suggestions on what I could do and thanks again :)

Should I use WD HDD or SSD for more compatibility on wii games because I was using a 32GB USB and it just worked for 1 time then it just won't want to work (I don't know if this offtopic)
