Is there a way to play xvid/divx other video formats on the DSi? If so, what would be required to to this?

    Thanks in advance.

Divx/xvid will play on the DSTwo assuming it's not HD.

h.264 is a very processor-intensive codec and will run laggily at best, don't even get your hopes up.

If you're talking about normal flash carts that don't have extra CPU/RAM, then no, you will have to run your videos through a converter to DPG first.

Yeah your options for "proper" video is
    an iplayer
    a DSTWO
    an iSmart MM

All those three contain a couple of chips that can do the decoding for them. You can just about do H264 but I would not count on it (low framerate, low res and probably little in the more exotic parts of profiles/encoder options), xvid and co work wonderfully though (your typical scene style AVI- XVID video works great).

There have also been a couple of ports of xvid to the DS, the best of which is http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/tuna-vids/ but it is nowhere near moonshell in terms of actual usefulness and in all likelihood you will be encoding videos for it anyway so just go in for moonshell.
