I'd like to play Dragon Quest IX with people, but no one I know has the game, so I kinda want to play with people online. Is there any current way to do this? I was thinking if there isn't, I might make homebrew for the Wii to relay the Ni-Fi messages, but that seems kinda gross

How funny, I had a conversation on the Ninty HB Discord server on this not too long ago. Convo screencaps below should explain (Be warned, it'll cover a bit of the screen.)
    Convo screencap: server 1
    Convo Screencap: Server 2
    Convo Screencap: Server 3
    Convo Screencap: Server 4

So TL;DR: no. Or at least, not without great effort on someone's part.

But if that homebrew you makr works, please share it! I'd love to play online too. Btw, what's Ni-Fi?

Ni-Fi is essentially the standard term for the communications protocol used by the NDS in local wireless communications.
