I can get a Wii U for pretty cheap without the gamepad ($80) so I'm just wondering if it's possible to setup the console without the gamepad.

    Thanks.

I hate how nintendo made the gamepad required for everything.
You shouldn't need a gamepad to edit your system settings or setup your wii u. You can edit settings and setup the console without a gamepad on other consoles so why does the wii u have to be different?

yes it is a requirement. however if you dont need wifi set up you can pray the wii u was setup for hdmi/1080p and plug it in, you might never actually need to go into settings

If you need to, borrow a gamepad if needed. Maybe take it to a local game store (mainstream places will probably say no) and see if they can let you setup the Wii U using one of their gamepads if they have any.
