I got a Gateway 3DS card a few years ago, right when the CFW scene JUST started, and the initial exploits were being found...stopped playing a few months later.

Fast forward to now, I'm kinda lost as to where I should pick up from here. It looks like CFW has been fully blown wide up since then, is there any reason at all to keep the Gateway? Compatibility? Playing Online? Cheats? Or should I finally do CFW? Before I jump in I wanna know if there is any redeeming factor to continuing using my Gateway. I went to the official site and see it hasn't been updated since Feb 2017 so that doesn't look promising...did Gateway become obsolete?

yes, gateway lost to the voids of despair once 11.3 firmware rolled out. You can look at decrypting your gateway saves and looking at installing cfw,

Thanks for the quick response, is there any CFW that immediately stands out that I should look into. I'm very familiar with soft modding lots of different systems but know nothing about the 3DS.

CFW has better (read: full) compatibility, is safe to play online (assuming you take a few precautionary steps and don't play pre-release leaks), and offers cheats. Plus my understanding is Gateway can't update their FW beyond a certain point, where as current CFW can be updated to current and future FW versions. The only reason to really not do it is if you would need to spend money but if you were running Gateway you most likely have an easily exploitable FW, either Soundhax or Browserhax would be my guess. I can't post links but "the guide" has everything you need. 3ds(dot)hacks(dot)guide

Thanks for the link, is there a particular CFW I want to end up on?

Why not use both if you already have Gateway? You can install CFW and also update some titles in emuNAND to run GW for a convenient way of managing .3ds files instead of installing .cia (and also a second microSD card) & more advanced cheats. Just be sure to have FW 11.2 or lower for emuNAND before you start or you'll have to downgrade your console for getting it. Here're some guides for this:

But why? With CFW you don't need an EmuNAND so you save space on your SD card. Plus you can update to the latest firmware. There's probably tons of other advantages that I'm missing too.

EmuNAND is only 1GB (don't forget that from now you can use a second microSD in a GW mode) and also you can update it to a pseudo-latest firmware so you free go online & run all latest titles too, I just posted links for required steps in my previous post. You miss nothing as you'll have a SysNAND with Luma CFW 11.6 & also get EmuNAND with GW spoofed to the same version as a bonus. So why no just get a best of both worlds? Of course it's applied only if you already own a GW card.

Ah ok, I thought it was more than 1 GB. I've never used Gateway or an EmuNAND since I only got started with CFW with ntrboot.

I still use my Gateway Card until today, cause i'am just too lazy to switch to CFW. The switching process takes over an hour, gateway still has 100% compatiblity (Even with an old 10.x Emunand.) and allows launching .3ds and installing .cia file. There is also a way to update the emunand to 11.x, by installing certain update-.cias one by one. But i'am also too lazy for this :glare:

The only thing i'am missing is installing and playing DsiWare .cias. I just can't figure out how to get this working with GW.

There's really no reason to keep using Gateway anymore and just best to retire it and move to a free CFW. As it stands now, they haven't added official support for anything above 11.2 nor B9S, making the official setup grossly out of date. There are methods to making it work with both, but honestly there's no reason to do so. Working with 11.6 requires making a frankenfirmware and working B9S requires running it through Luma3DS. Basically it requires you to setup a better method, then gimp it to work with Gateway.

As one who have GW I still prefer it to Luma for running / managing my games, it's just more convenient for me. Also have a latest Luma setup but I rarely boot into it, so your point isn't for everyone. But of course it's sad that Team GW ditched this card & I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy it or any other their product (*cough*StarGate*cough*).

You are free to have whatever setup of your choosing (I run FastBoot3DS with Rei-Six booted off my FIRM1,) but that really don't change the fact that Gateway is out of date and using it requires a gimped setup. Some people enjoy this setup, but it's really recommended anymore.

I don't really use it anymore because of the outdated firmware. I would, if it could be updated though..
