OP
I would like to transfer my Pokemon from Pokemon Platinum to Pokemon Y, but I don't have a retail copy of Pokemon Platinum. I was planning on spending money specifically on Pokemon Bank so I could transfer my Pokemon from Platinum.
Is there any way I can transfer these Pokemon, or is it impossible to do?

I'm sorry but you'll need a Generation 5 retail cartridge in order to transfer to Bank. And a way to write save files to said cart.

The problem is Pokemon Bank is expecting a save file to be in a specific location on the game card which is impossible for the R4i to emulate because of the way it boots up games.

I actually have two Gen 5 retail carts.
Pokemon White and Pokemon White 2
Would I be able to transfer my Pokemon to one of those first?

That's a good thing but unfortunately the Download Play mini-game the Gen 5 game uses to transfer Pokemon from Gen 4 to 5 is also expecting the save file to be somewhere the R4i can't produce.

Your best bet is to get some kind of save dongle like this.

(There are others but this is the first one that pops up on Google)

What you'll need to do is this:

#1-Copy Platinum save to computer

#2-Open in PokeGen save desired Pokemon as .pkm files

#3-Run batch tool to generate Gen 5 catch data for your Pokemon

#4-Dump your Gen 5 game save with Save Dongle (or GBA flash cart on DS/DS Lite)

#5-Open that save in PokeGen, copy your Gen 4 .pkm files into empty slots in Box 1

#6-Save changes, and write modified save back to Gen 5 game card

#7-Now Bank should be able to transfer them as long as they don't have any illegal move-sets or impossible EV spreads.

I did it like this:
I got two ds lites, two r4 sdhc's One with diamond/pearl (also applies to platinum) One pokemon black cartridge
#1 send the pokemon to black from your ds (lite) r4 to the other ds with the cartridge (also possible with 1 ds (lite) and 1 3ds)
#2 upload them to poketransfer it should work, no problems had
#3 send them to pokebank or your other pokemon cartridge using bank

That's interesting, when my Black game sent the DS Download play signal to my DS with the R4 with Pokemon Platinum it couldn't find my game save.

No Oh wait I also had a hg game

That makes sense.

Trade the Pokemon from the R4 to a legit Gen 4 game
From the legit gen 4 game to the legit Gen 5 game via 2 DS units through Poke-transfer minigame
And finally they're ready for Bank.

Thanks for the alternate solution! That'll help OP if they have a 2nd DS and a retail Gen 4 game.
