Like Dep said, READ Only Memory.
It means you CAN NOT write to it.
No, you'll have to get a flashcard or swap out the ROM chip with a reprogrammable chip containing a game which has the same mappers (think it also for SNES, know it's NES for sure) as the original game.
Not to mention special chips like the Super FX.
