Had some problems lately with hbg crashing and all, but they fixed that rather quickly. So far I didn't had any problem with that so yeah, maybe you should check again their discord and be sure that you have downloaded the last version. Also I never heard anything about them stealing certs, to me it's pure BS, why would they steal certs via Tinfoil but also advise you to use Incognito ? They can't steal the cert if you use Incognito so that's some weird accusation there, but if you are still a little bit paranoid about it, just use Incognito, it's so far the best way to avoid Nintendo's servers anyway so you'll need either that or 90DNS if you don't want to avoid to be banned (still can't guarantee you won't be)

And yeah, it's the only software that will let you update that easily directly on the console. The updates and DLC menus works but shows only the updates you haven't installed for the games that are already installed on the console. If something is not working I'll advise you to get it somewhere else : on the discord directly or some other website.
