I don't like having to power off every time I want to transfer large files over because FTP is slow.

Not recommended, but I've started to "hotunplug" the sdcard a few months ago (fat32 file format), simply because of usability benefits, and never ran into corruption issues.
So basically - I make sure I'm in the home menu - and just jank the sdcard. The switch then automatically throws a complain message, with a handy shut down option. Saves me several button presses every time..
From a usability point of view this works perfectly. At least with fat32 formated cards. In case you are planing to do something similar, make backups of your cards content ("important" emu saves, images, ..)
