it's detecting something in the RAM

No it isn't. The RAM of the drive cannot be read. The SMG reads the media type of the disc, a command that was not patched by most modchips. (AFAIK)

At least, that's what I gathered from the OpenWii forums. (OpenWii supports SMG - the first Open-source chip to do so)

well what I understood is that it had something to do with the timing of the patching of the ram or whatnot.. That it detects the media but then the modchip changes that value in the ram? 's what I understood.
Anyone got a link somewhere with exact details? I'm quite interested in what it actually is that was wrong

Is there any chance that the "protection" isn't actually protection and just a problem caused by the SMG release being a "demo" disk??
