Is Smash 2018 a port, or a new game?

Is Smash 2018 a port, or a new game?

Yesterday we had a whole slew of new games revealed on Nintendo's latest Direct, but the title that stood out as the presentation ended, was Super Smash Bros.

One thing Nintendo conveniently forgot to mention or hint at in any way; is the game a port of the WiiU Smash, following the trend of a lot of the current AAA Switch library? Or is it an entirely new Smash, just for Switch? Or maybe it's a mix of the 2, a DX version?

We've already had a ton of theories in the Super Smash Brothers announce thread - but here, we would like you to cast a vote!

I personally think it's going to be Smash 5, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if its a """deluxe edition""" port with like 3 more characters seeing as thats the majority of the Switch's library

People keep whining about this acting like everybody in the world had played WiiU games already. WiiU "ports" might as well be native Switch games, because WiiU was both a mistake and a failure.

Except people did buy a Wii U, you can even get a Wii U + games for fairly cheap these days. Or you can emulate with Cemu at better quality than a Switch.

Ignoring that, rather than giving fans new experiences or new games they just reuse old products (but with a bow on top) and sell it to you for the same price. I mean the fact that there's a vocal group of people saying the same thing should be a warning sign at the very least. I really don't get the mindset of defending Nitnendo like they're a little kid on the playground.

Yeah, a whole 10 million worldwide bought one in WiiU's lifetime, almost doubled by Switch's sales in a single year.

And you can get one cheap, but if you've already got a Wii then you've got 2/3rds of a WiiU in a better system. If you have a Switch then that covers the other third much better than WiiU does, or as you said, you can just emulate it for free.

Wii U: Can Emulate? Yes. Is portable? No. Sold a decent amount? No. Has incredible games? Yes.
Switch: Can Emulate? Kinda. Is Portable? Yes. Sold a decent amount? Yes. Has incredible games? Yes.

The Switch is already at better odds than the Wii U, so just don't bother buying the ports if you don't want them. They take less effort to make than most things, and aren't really a primary concern. Just be grateful you don't have 300 CoD games on the Switch.

The wii u is easier to mod so i'd still get one if you hack it can even play gamecube games.

What are you talking about? You can emulate three different versions of Smash with PC or Wii just fine, and I'm pretty sure CEMU's latest builds are killer for Sm4sh as long as you've got a beefy system.

Also, Smash Switch is a new game.

Gaming pcs are more expensive then a wii u. you also can't rip the games legally with out a wii u or wii.

I do like how you both ignored the second half. When the majority of your consoles library are ports from a console that was considered an "absolute failure", and has a large number of the fan base noticing they're just rehashing the same games with a little cherry on top at the exact same price, then yes there is an issue. There isn't anything wrong with criticizing your favourite company, they aren't a charity.
I feel like I got deja vu writing this post

Firstly, stop using hyperbole. Switch is not a "majority" WiiU ports by any accurate count. Secondly, WiiU had some good games, but the hardware design and marketing were shit. So people who have never played these games before want to play them on a superior system.

yes but they are full price you will save money getting a wiiu and buying the games on there instead of buying all the switch ports.

smash 4 took 6 years how can this be a new smash if its only coming out 4 years after smash 4

Melee released about 2 years and 10 months after the original 64 version. Brawl came out a little over 6 years after Melee. And 4 came out about 5 and a half years after Brawl. There is no set pattern, and to think that if there was one therefore dictates the path the series follows would be silly. This game coming out 4 years after 4 isn't an unreasonable amount of time to believe a new title was put together here.

And miss out on all new games plus the portable aspect. Worth it to nobody. WiiU is a dead system, simple as that. Some people just won't let it go.

i mean if you already have a switch all the ports and a wii u on the wii u will be cheaper then buying the ports on the switch. your just wasting money buying them on the switch.

Sure, but DX ports aren't meant to appeal to WiiU owners, they're meant to appeal to the other 99% of the gaming audience that didn't buy WiiUs. You can ignore them and buy only new games, that's fine. You just need to realize that the ports aren't slowing development of new games, only bringing those old experiences to new audiences.
