Is it recommended to trade my modded PS3 for a (probably) unmodded PS4?

My dad suggested that we should trade my modded PS3 for a ps4 as a christmas gift for me, but i'm not really sure about that since I heard the PS4 is harder to mod and stuff.

I think you should stick with the modded PS3. It has more to offer then a PS4, and if you don't own a 4k TV, you won't get 4k graphics anyways. Also it seems you need a PS4 on a lower firmware for decent mod anyways, where most newer PS4 models will be updated beyond 9.0 firmware.

I thought there were maybe 10 to 15 games, but turns out there's 181 PS3 exclusive games, so yeah, keep it.

These type of questions will ultimately be up to you. Spend some time researching such as googling "list of PS3 games" and "list of PS4 games" and hopefully you're pretty aware of most of the games on both consoles and decide for yourself. One person may prefer PS3 over PS4, and another person the opposite. You have to decide.

That is not correct, PS4 is easier than PS3 to mod. The only bad thing is PS4 is not a permanent mod when you turn it off completely you have to redo the exploit. But if you use sleep mode the exploit remains.

The only thing is you have to have firmware 11.0 or below to mod a PS4. There is no exploit for anything about 11.0 and if your dad buys a brand new one in stores it probably will be above 11, at least I think so.

Look this issue is between you are your dad we can't really help you. If PS3 is important to you tell him you can't get game x and game y and game z on PS4 but only if you keep PS3 can you have these games. If that doesn't work there's nothing any of us on gbatemp can do about it.

Is it not valid to explain that it is/you have modded the system? You could show off what you couldn't do anymore if it's traded off.

Anyway, I like my modded PS4 but I've never owned a modded PS3. My PS4 is on 11.0, I never experienced any of the good fun 9.0 stuff. pppwn was worth the wait.

I wouldn't bother with the PS4. If you can afford a PS5 then get one. If you can't then stick with your modded PS3.

Eh the PS4 has quite a few good games and most of the good PS3 games are on PS4 including remasters. There's very few good exclusives left for PS3 the main reason to keep one is that psx-place made PS2 support way better than Sony did. Most PS2 games work if you use config files.

Oooh, I haven't heard "psx-place" in a long time. I wonder how they're doing all these years later.

Yeah, I agree with @Jayinem. If your argument is that the PS3 is worth keeping, consider games you want to play and games you'll lose access to by trading it. See what games your father wants to play on the PS4, and see if the number of games outweighs the cost and inability to play PS3 games.

We get questions like "should I buy x console" all the time on the forum. It all comes down to listing the games and considering the costs.

I doubt he'll get much for it at a local game store anyway. And I'm fairly certain GameStop has stopped selling/buying PS3 stuff (not 100%, as I have not been in such a foul place since before the Human Malware Incident happened) so that's probably out of the question.

And if he really loved you he'd get you a PS5. For all those PS4 games it plays more like how they should have played, and all the potential games that it could have one day. One day...

Modded PS3 has a bunch of potential. Iirc, it's own library isn't 100% backwards compatible with the PS4 for moneygrabbing and dumbass licencing reasons.
