I'm on 5.5.1 so it's out of the question for any mods at the moment for me, but I'm curious if this was ever possible on a lower firmware?

Yes, with WUP installer and the eShop patcher. Some of us on 5.3.2/5.4.0 spoofed to version 5.5.1, then used said spoof + eShop Patcher to go on the shop to get DLC/new games. WUP Installer lets us install game updates and new version.bins to spoof with.

For lower firmware (5.3.2 or 5.4.0 for example) they can firmware spoof to get eshop access and install game updates and DLC.

As for you on 5.5.1, you can do that with no extra effort.

Edit: better reply above and ninja'd

Ah I see, but I actually meant if it was possible to install DLCs from that iso site and have the game disc detect it in game. Or is that also installed with WUP installer too?

Thanks for the quick responses. I own several retail discs but I was wondering if I missed the window to grabbing some DLC content.

As far as I know, you can't pirate DLC on the Wii U yet.
