then update to 9.2 and install a9lh. you can skip about an hour of setup by being on 2.1 already.

Actually, that's a really good point! If OP manages to dump the OTP before doing any updating, the entire free hacking process can be done in about 2 hours!

EDIT: Oh wait a second. Even then, they will need a physical copy of Ocarina of Time or a game with a 4.x firmware on it. (Still cheaper than Sky3DS+ though!)

@S4L: You should update to 9.2 if you want to play Majora's Mask. You can spend about $70 to get a Sky3DS+ if you want a quick solution to playing games on the latest firmware. At any point before or after you get your Sky3DS+, you can follow the 3-5 hour Plailect Wiki Guide if you want a free alternative to the Sky3DS/more control over your system to be able to do things such as play games that came out requiring 9.6+ firmware (it seems being on latest firmware isn't good enough to resolve this issue, but I'm not sure), easier access to homebrew, and home-menu game management. I'm not sure if I'm missing anything else (Themes/out of region games, maybe?), but I think Sky3DS+ might be the way to go, if you're willing to pay for it.

if you're on 2.1.0 you can dump your OTP, then update to 4.x with oot3d, then 9.2, then set up a9lh cfw. if you set up cfw, you get homebrew, but you can also update to the latest version (10.7) with impunity, as well as installing games on your internal SD card.

The latest games require 9.9+ (Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, Zelda Tri Force Heroes, etc).

You're welcome to update as far as you want, because you have a sky3ds+ you can run .3ds roms even on 10.7 but it's worthwhile to do the one-time setup of cfw so you can have 10.7 with the goodies that come along.

Regardless if you want to do cfw now, I'd recommend you spend the few minutes to dump the OTP while you're ahead so if you decide to later, you can set it up far quicker.

If you already have the Sky3DS, what you should do is dump your OTP with Cubic Ninja, then update to 9.2 so you can play your game. (Updating to latest firm might be easier than manually updating to 9.2, actually.)

At any point after that, you can spend an extra 2 hours to get the other features that CFWs offer. You don't actually have to dump the OTP, but it is easy to get from 2.x and will save you about 3 hours of pain if you ever decide to get CFW.

Even if you don't have any intention of using homebrew I'd still recommend installing A9LH so that way you get automatic region-free patching on boot.

That's not how any of that works, but the biggest flaw in your logic is that Ninjhax 1 only works 4.0+.

Actually, Normmatt made a CN 1.0 dumper and there is a QR for 2.x consoles. However, it can also be done through a web browser entrypoint like most other users do, assuming this user still has the web browser.

In any case, I would still recommend dumping the OTP before doing any updating.

in that case, you would have to downgrade to get your OTP. I'm not sure if you can downgrade from 3.0 to 2.1, so I think the best option now is to go to 9.2. if you don't want to do the 2.1 downgrade you can set up an EmuNAND and update it to 10.7 (your system will be on 9.2, but you have a secondary system running on your SD card that is updated all the way and supports all the cfw special stuff)

I didn't know until I tried helping someone with their 1.0.0U NAND+OTP dump! It's now public knowledge, but nobody's ever publicly posted the CN OTP dumper itself. One moment while I upload+dump+edit the rest of my other post.
