You can question this question to every system you own, because in 90% there is always a tool which can brick your system, but even than it's your choice to hack your system.

But as pwsincd said the officially the WiiU isn't hacked, alteast there isn't anything released which can brick your system

Yeah I guess the Wii U is pretty new, never thought about that. Maybe hold off hacking till next year. Because then the console will be cheaper and you can just goto the store everytime you brick one.

If you are flashing third party software to the device, then yes there is a chance of bricking. If you just use an exploit to inject code into memory but don't flash anything (like using smash stack to boot a piece of wii homebrew) there is virtually no chance of bricking. Things only start to get dangerous once you start to flash over system files
