Question Is GC/Wii emulation on the Switch a stupid idea? Because it sure looks that way...

I accidentally made this a question thread, whoops.
    DC9E7F04-2BA4-40CD-8B8C-603ACAF000F3.
Before you reply to the thread, read it first. If I do say anything that isint correct or is misleading then please correct me.

I had a switch for about 4 months before selling it, so I don’t claim to be an expert on anything.

The only thing I’m basing my claim on is my understanding of the system specs. So again, please feel free to correct me.

    Alright,
So the first thing I did when I got a switch was safely open the system up and look at its technical side. I wanted to know how much of a step up from the Wii U it was.

Needless to say I was pretty disappointed.

Though the GPU spec was better than the Wii U’s, it was limited by the flimsy small design of the console, making the actual preformance close to the same as the Wii U. On the other hand, the CPU spec of the RPU was actually just the same as the Wii U, which meant that the small environment for it would basically make the Wii U CPU far better.

“But wait!” I hear you say, “the Wii U can still emulate GCN games!”
And you’d be correct to only a very small extent.
For one, Nintendont is a loader, not an emulator, it just uses the GC system built into the Wii’s OS to play the games. So that is completely excluded.
The only real emulator type thing for GC on Wii U is the over clocked emulator, which is out of the water because it (hence the name) overclocks the specs. And over clocking is pretty much a lost cause on the switch for obvious reasons (the system would melt because it’s so small!). And even with overclocking the Wii U, the performance on the emulator was ASININE.

*Keep in mind that emulation is mainly CPU extensive. And the switch has a worse preforming CPU spec than the Wii U!

So, to get back on the subject, why would anybody invest in a GCN emulator for a Switch? Let alone a Wii emulator! It’s absurd to suggest that the performance would be anything but awful.

The whole thing would equate to nothing but a bunch of wasted time.

The geniuses that developed the home brew for the switch in the past should know better than to waste their time fighting a battle that they can’t win.

If people are still hellbent on getting 5fps on a dysfunctional GC emulator then I think the best course of action would be to develop more realistic brew until Nintendo utilized the E-Shop more.
The fact that Nintendo only has shovelware and NES games on the e-shop should be a dead giveaway that the Switch can’t handle much.

It’s pretty obvious why I sold my switch now, the specs are so disappointing that it’s actually better to just wait for YUZU to emulate a bit better than o by Nintendo’s shitty console.

If this type of emulation is possible than please enlighten me. Even if you have nothing much to add I still would like to know if you think it would be worthwhile for the Switch Devs to try to take on GC/Wii Emulation, because to me it seems crazy.

I’m such an idiot, I forgot about RetroArch.

    Is it at native resolution?
Because that’s a very impressive frame rate for the switches CPU spec, even at a crappy resolution or visual presentation.

    Now I’m confused.
Either they found a way to up the CPU or they did black magic

Overclocking has been a thing for a long time, and the CPU isn't as weak as you think. It sounds like you didn't do any research and jumped on the "hurr durr switch is weak" train

Nintendont is a loader, not an emulator, it just uses the GC system built into the Wii’s OS to play the games.

no lol nothing like that, there us no such thing as a gc system built in wii os lol.

gc is ppc and uses gx cpu, the wii is ppc also and uses the same gx cpu, what nintendont does is translate gc calls into wii calls so the wii mode understands what to show and whatnot, there is no gc bubble or gc os built into wii mode lol, but wii mode on wiiu uses the same ppc cpu that wiiu uses underclocked and has its own gpu called gx, while wiiu mode has another gpu called gx2, and yes the wiiu has 2 gpus in it.

Okay looks like I screwed up on a ton of things so let’s all just stop talking so this thread goes under and I don’t embarrass myself further

Well since they have wii games on Nvidia shield tv which looks almost as good as Dolphin emu on a good pc does (Maybe better) :ninja:

Perhaps wii games on switch won't be as bad as you think. Unlike on wii u which was basically a 1-to-1 clone with only few games providing use of the game pad, nvidia shield tv wii games use the controller only. With the hopes of that coming to switch and playing Mario Galaxy for the first time in 1080P HD and with a traditional controller (not a wii mote with motion controls) I can't help but think of the possibilities. :)

But that’s quite an accusation, suggesting that I didn’t do my reasearch and dislike the hardware for the sake of being contrarian is more of an insult than a suggestion.
I saw the AMD based cpu when I had a switch back in the day and (or at least the internet said) that it was relatively weak, and that it was limited a fair amount by the design of the console.
I am quite blown away that the home brew devs were able to do a lot with a little in that reguard. On paper it semmed impossible.

Also thanks for the correction @pedro702 i had forgotten about how that worked.

    @Sonic Angel Knight
I just purely based my pessimism on the system specs, which apparently are much more flexible than I thought they were on paper. So that’s good to know.

This thread has been answered, somebody bar it off.

    Hell
More specifically Lakka, which is a Retroarch linux distro. And that 20-25fps is with a shitty graphics driver ;)

Edit: It’ runs at 480p and you need overclocking on both GPU and CPU

    Well, there you go.

Is there any way the performance will improve? Or at that point is it just a matter of specs?

nintendo only needs to make the cpu go to the normal speed, because shield tv and switch are exactly the same hardwarewise and shield tv runs gc games emulated in hd.

maybe switch revision will do that so people will be incited to buy it.

They are? I thought that nVidia would use their own hardware to make sheild tv, not use AMDs stuff like Nintendo does.
Then again the brand could be different but still be the same preformance wise so I’m really not sure.

At least, it makes me a TINY bit more optimistic about the switch.
I still don’t plan on re-buying it unless the nintendo devs really pull their balls out of the earth and actually improve the quality of the system.

I’m an idiot, I just remembered that the switch uses an nVidia chipset, not an AMD one like all the other ones do.

getting nvgpu (nvidias official driver) to work in Lakka would probably improve performance

If Nintendo & Nvidia can make a gamecube/wii emulator for the shield tv, they can make one for the switch. Dolphin currently isn't up to the task.

Well it turns out the switch isint as bad as I thought, but it’s still pretty shitty.
