Is drive spoofing still all bad now?

    Here's the skinny...

Thankfully my own personal 360 is perfectly fine. The issue is a white 360 I picked up from my fiancee's brother. It turns out that even though it was made much later, it still seems to be the same revision of just about everything to my own Elite 360. Same board, same DVD drive. It does turn on fine... but for some reason the DVD drive doesn't open when I try to eject it. Now, when I opened it up, I was surprised to see it was the same kind of DVD drive as in my personal 360 - a 7k liteon.

So it seems that if I try to open the DVD drive shell enough, I can get it to eject and go back in no problem. Except... then I can't put it back together again, and I can't say that would be good for holding the disc steady when actually trying to read something there.

    So... here's the deal.

Before this, I had already picked up a BenQ drive from a busted 360 that I was going to use to rip my own games, but otherwise it's basically sitting back in a corner. Right now it would be expensive, and take a while, before I could get a replacement lite-on 7k, and with the way Amazon lists things, I'm not entirely able to guarantee I'll get a lite-on 7k. Or, I could possibly spoof this BenQ to behave as a LiteON 7k for this one to at least make use of it in the meantime. But I know that was kind of a big issue back then... so has there been a solution to that? Or is it still a case of where I will have to wait until I can get another LiteOn drive?

Spoofing a non AP2.5 enabled drive to a AP2.5 enabled drive is a bad thing as the 360 cannot verify the AP sector then.
Benq and Liteon are AP2.5 drives so you can spoof it yes.

Awesome... that will save me some time and money! HA HA!

Alright, so that sounds good. Well, with that in mind, I want to do it as correctly as possible. What would be the steps I need to take?

    Getting flashgear and Jungleflasher.
JF comes with a manual which also covers spoofing.

I knew about jungleflasher, but... what's flashgear? I still have my old maximus ck3 kit with the no-solder probe for extracting the key. The one and same I used for my own personal 360.

Then you're good to go ;]
"flashgear" is the hardware you use to extract and flash FW's

Okay, one more question... what's the news regarding the newest dashboard update? Is LT 3.0 firmware still safe for that? I didn't see anything new about it posted on c4eva's site.

Also, if I flash the BenQ as spoofed Lite-On, will it be okay for taking official updates?

LT 3.0 is still safe yes.
Be sure to patch your games.

Yes, but best is to swap the drive with the original when updating to be safe.

Well, what I was thinking was simply to spoof the BenQ as a lite-on, but having it use 'stock' firmware, since it's not my main console anyway. Would that trip any alarms?

Even when accepting OTA dash updates? If that's true, you're going to make me very hopeful, and happy! :yay:

Best is to just swap it for the original when updating.
Then there's nothing that can go wrong ;]
Ofcourse Titleupdates are different and don't have NAND access.

I don't think MS would release any more dash/kernel updates, seeing that the XBone gets all the attention now.

Okay... I should be ready to go do this thing this weekend, in between other stuff in life to do during the weekend.

I've been mentally running the steps through my head, and thankfully got a tower that I could put the VIA SATA card into in the meantime. The paradox issue right now is that the system I normally use to flash my personal 360's DVD drive I do via DOS and a boot floppy. And the system I currently have setup has no floppy drive. At the moment, I have yet to find a way to boot DOS off a USB flash drive like I've seen in some YouTube videos done.

But the way I have broke it down thus far in my mind is as follows:
    • Install VIA SATA card, drivers, and Jungle flasher on MCE tower running Windows
    • Remove original lite-on DVD drive from (currently) 'broken' 360, use the Maximus CK3 kit to extract/dump the dvd drive key
    • Put drive back into said 360
    • Install latest dash(?) to avoid problems(?)
    • With drive key, get the BenQ drive
    • Follow instructions on Jungle flasher to flash BenQ drive to spoof as the LiteON said 360 is paired up with
    • Prep firmware to do DOSflash (since as of yet, I had never been successful in flashing the dvd drive in Windows, whereas the DOS way has worked every single time)
Does that sound about right? Also, is there a way to prep a (preferably) small USB flash drive to boot into DOS to run those DOS tools? If so, that would at least let me also not have to dredge out the oldest tower for these purposes, or wasting time trying to set up THAT one with windows and all those updates, too.

As an aside, is there a way to make a flash drive bootable into a build of DOS? If so, it would effectively allow me to retire my eldest machine, and potentially save some space, while i'm at it.

Augh, I can't believe this... finally got everything system-wise ready. Got at least my personal 360 updated and running LT again. But when I was prepping the spare for its first job... of all the things I couldn't find, was the DVD drive itself. This is especially weird because I made a point to put it with the other things I was going to use with that console and now I can't find it.

I suppose I could just like, extract the drive key in the meantime, but I was hoping to do it all in one shot, you know? :(
