Is collecting physical retail games worth it?

This is question that has been going through my mind for quite some time. Is a physical video game collection worth it? I mean I'm debating to go all digital during gen 8.5 only because everything I have is taking up so much space. I just don't know if the reward outweighs the work with the reward being having something cool to look at and show your friends with the work being keeping up with your collection, essentially maintaining it. What do you guys think.

If you like to do it, then do it. People have collections of random stuff that seems worthless to everyone else, like collecting rocks and stuff. If you don't really collect or aren't serious about it, then going digital would be a good alternative

i only like limited edtion physical games ( like steelcases etc) i dont really care if my normal games are physical or digital. In the end i will prob buy the cheapest version.

I like doing it but it's also a matter of fuctionality and practicality. As in how much space with this take up and what could I put there that is useful that I can't since I have video games.

Until your account gets hacked or banned.
Like some fool who modded his gamerscore and got banned over it.
6 years worth of gaming has vanished.
Couldn't get to his account to download his games/DLC anymore.

For me, Retail games all the way.
I just like having a collection on me shelf.

I have all 243 PAL N64 carts, and an ED64 v2 (and a wiiu with 60+ N64 vc injects)..... aaaaand I always play carts!

NB: I realise n64 was pre digital distribution, but the principles are the same.... its like MP3 vs vinyl.... I have stacks of vinyl

Having a shelf of gaems in rather lovely but the amount of space it takes up is pretty annoying at times.

With music and books, I've gone full digital.

You can't sell bits of data (eShop games) for real money like you can with a physical cart, unless you sell your whole 3DS along with NNID. So yes. It is better.

Servers shut down for consoles, want to redownload a game or harddrive with games on it dies, you are screwed. Takes forever to download games digitally vs taking 10 to 30 minutes to go to a store to buy it.

Can't resell digital games unless you probably sell the whole account with the games tied to it. A lot console games in digital form might not ever have permanent price drops so used copy of games might be cheaper in the long run.

If you're a pirate, they'll pirate what they want, if you want to help a company and buy the game they sell, do that.

Honestly, I think it's more impressive having over 45 ISO files distributed in 3 HDD's than a mess of game cases

On consoles, worth it for the savings. 2 recently released titles

Doom, UK psn £49.99.
Uncharted 4 UK psn £44.99

Meanwhile, both those titles can be picked up physical for £35. Doom has even been lower at times.

Unless you want to get into gamesharing/account sharing, you'd be a mug to pay UK digital prices on consoles.

PC, all digital there as you're not bent over for convenience.

I like physical because
- saves bandwidth
- I can resale
- games can be bought cheap in bundles off of Craigslist or whatever
- I can borrow and lend games to friends
- I like the artwork of the boxes
- I never have to worry about the server or having my account lost

I'd say it really depends on you. Having a nice shelf full of games is great but it's hard to deny the convenience of having everything right there on your system.

As for myself I personally am too attached to having a nice shelf displaying my games to switch over. That said I've also got digital games that I got on sale or pirated. I may consider switching over to digital when I have the money to afford so sething else to display like figures from all the games, but until then I'll stay loyal to my physical collection

Servers eventually go offline. Hard drives and memory cards wear down and break. Carts and optical discs generally only break if you abuse them.

Certainly at times digital sales are cheaper, but it comes at the cost of never being to trade them up for other games, or pawn a bad game off on an unsuspecting friend.
