Is Britain in its current state as bad as the media makes it out to be?

I literally just purchased a set of steak knives and no one asked me anything. At the Westfield.
In the UK, many items are 'challenge 25'. If you look younger than 25 to buy something you need to be 16/18 to buy, then you're supposed to be ID'd. You must look old enough that's all.

Did a quick google search and I am finding a lot of threads on Reddit, posts on Twitter, etc. talking about being carded for butter knives, potato peelers, and other cutlery. So unless these people all collectively decided to lie, I think it might be an issue

I will say that the context of the locations often matters. The grimmest towns will probably check everyone for anything remotely resembling a knife, whereas me and my mates bought a bag full of aerosols and some lighter fluid from a shop in a more 'up market' area and nobody blinked (this was like 10+ years ago I'm a grown up now, honest )

Aww I did get asked for ID when buying alcohol like a couple months ago, but for the 4 steak knives? Nothing. And besides, it's not like they're recording my ID.

Well that's because you look over 25, and a grown adult of course. There's a Challenge 25 policy where if you don't look old enough you are asked to give ID.

Not that old when it comes to alcohol apparently, and therefore you were complaining about something that affects a ridiculously low amount of people, assuming it's real.

I’m not that invested to find out if there’s just a random collection of people lying about something so random. Something tells me that context, location, appearance, etc. matter and thus your millage will vary. To be honest, I don’t think these people are lying and I don’t think you are either but I do think you are going through hoops over something that just doesn’t affect you personally but seems to effect others
I am confused as to why you are trying to convince me that this isn’t a thing. Seems like others in this thread are bringing up that it is a thing and it seems like a lot of people have experienced this thing. So I am confused why you are trying to deny it

I went to Tesco to buy some scissors the other day. There weren't a single pair on any shelves. Turns out, I was supposed to walk round to customer services (outside main section security), describe to them the kind of scissors I wanted and they would go look in the back, then I would pay them and have to leave the store immediately.

I went home and ordered them from Amazon instead where there were no checks at all and they arrived later the same day and just left outside the door.

Where presumably anybody can wander up and get them.

This is one of the dumbest things about living in Britain—we can't do fucking anything properly. Every half-assed system has a loophole or oversight.

I guess just to add to this IDing conversation, my mother works at Lakeland (which is a cookware/kitchen supply shop for those not in the UK). Having asked her they IDs for knives, but not scissors or potato peelers. They also have to ID for Christmas crackers there lol, I assume too many people have watched the Mr Bean Christmas special??

Interesting, if I get alcohol from amazon they do want to see my id

I guess when Johnson and Farage were wailing about unnecessary EU regulations, they weren't really blaming but projecting.

*now wants to buy some scissors as a political statement of what the EU represents :P *
