Hacking Is a DVD drive necessary for Backup Loaders to funciton?

Can you run a backup loader without a DVD drive in your Wii?
Will the state of the DVD drive affect game loading? (in general)

Someone replaced his DVD drive with a HDD drive on time, it's on here somewhere.
I can't find it though. Don't know the outcome too, but it's definitely been tried....

he had to modify the dvd controler board the loaders would not work if the drive was compleatly disconected
