I dunno if you know this but I see that the switch has a option for 480P output when used on tv. Why is beyond me since the device works with HDMI only and that means only HDTV will have the proper input for it and most likely have 720P support or above. So It just sat there in my mind for very long time as to why it's a option? So I'm asking anyone if they know a good reason to use it.

One thing, I did try it just to see... well why the heck not. At first I noticed people complaining about performance issues so I figured if 480P would change that, but it does not. Why did I think that? Well cause it does on a computer so it "COULD" elsewhere. Second I just tried it for the sake of trying it, wanted to know if my eyes can see a difference. I wear glasses to see distances clearly, and yes I can notice a difference in graphics. That's it. And so leads me to asking this question to you people. :P

480P is "OBJECTIVELY" worst than 720P and I can't see why any modern game console with HDMI would have option for something lower and TV supporting it would have 720P or above anyway. Why someone in these conditions would use 480P either is also what I wonder. Now I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, cause if you like it then it's fine. No problem if that is the case, but I'm more curious about why since the conditions for playing games in HD is most likely met already. Playstation 4 also has the same situation with only supporting HDMI output and it doesn't go lower than 720P which seem to make sense. So if you think I'm just don't understand, well by all means teach me a lesson cause I'm listening. :ninja:

Yeah, the option is unnecesary, since the switch already go below 480p by itself for a few moments in graphically demanding games :P

Yeah 480p is really nice for 4:3 CRT TVs as it gives you a really clear image, but besides that I wouldn't see the point. With that being said, I don't believe there's anyway of getting analog video out of the Switch to begin with so the whole CRT thing doesn't make any sense. HDMI CRTs were very rare, and usually had a lot of input lag due to DAC and upscaling

Imagine for some reason you buy an HDMI to VGA adapter that doesn't support rescaling, and then you travel to the past, to the early 90s.
After you reach your destination you notice you forgot to bring along a TV.
Your only option is to get a good old Samsung Syncmaster 3, and plug it on...
But oh damn, when you choose 720p or more it goes out of sync and nothing shows up!
Fortunately your Switch has an internal 480p rescaling mode! Yey!

You see, thankfully Nintendo engineers though about this totally probable scenario, thanks to them you'll be alright even if you forget to pack along a TV when you travel to the past!

Nowadays, where you can get a TV with HDMI for less than 100€, I start to believe an HDMI to AV cable might quite probably be more expensive than an HDTV.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Choice is never bad, you can play the Switch on a 1970's TV if you want something a little unique:

True, but... HDMI to AV converters already include downscalers (usually).

The ONLY scenario I see it being remotely usefull is if you have a reciever plugged in to a standard resolution TV. My mother has one LCD that's not HD. I don't think it has HDMI, so this could be one of those edge cases.

What does Nintendo care about? Family. What does your out of touch with modern technology grandma have? An old CRT television. Little Jimmy can now play on that huge box from the previous millennium with ease. He just needs an adapter.

Seriously, say anything you want about Nintendo, but the Switch really feels like a family system far more than anything else they made, or competition did.

Just check the video above, he is playing Switch in a 1970s TV... with 1080p output resolution selected. (timestamp 6:10)

I really don't know why someone would play on a crt tv nowadays unless its with an older system. The only argument for them is no lag but a digital to analog converter will add lag so it defeats the purpose. Also the only crt tvs I know of that have hdmi inputs are hdcrt and they support 1080i so i guess for the 28 people on earth with 480p lcds from 2002 that still work, 480p is useful.....or i guess an old lcd computer monitor.
