Hi!

The Retro Future checked out two WIFI chips (yes, wifi chips seems to be the DS firmware?!) where he boots iQue firmware and Prototype firmware on the DS.
Enjoy!

@rvtr is the one to discover this, by flashing the pre-existing flash chip on the Wi-Fi card with a different firmware. She should've been credited for this work, though.

To be as polite as possible, this is a fucking garbage video.
  • Does not mention where this firmware came from (X4 DS phat)
  • Does not credit the person who dumped is (MasChief)
  • Barely mentions it was custom flashed leaving viewers with the impression he owns a real prototype
  • Adding to above, calls this a never seen before prototype. This has been dumped for two fucking years
  • Does not mention that there are guides to install this as well
  • Does not go into detail of the firmware (literally just google info please) and does nothing but sound like someone who doesn't know what they're talking about with forced enthusiasm
  • For the iQue firmware he does not set the chinese language (the most important part)
  • Barely mentions about why iQue exists
  • Says stupid shit like "nintendo lawyers are gonna sue me"
They won't fucking sue him. Please see my comment (and brace yourself for braindead retro future audience)

You as a creator have a responsibility to get the facts right, to share the complete story. When someone new stumbles across your content, what you produce becomes their first impression. What you create becomes fact (even if untrue) and people will never look further. They will now question legitimate content because the big, smart youtuber must be right! They will spread BS about how the DS lite has prototype firmware or how the iQue firmware is the exact same. They will tell people that these boards are so rare and legitimate, creating a stupid wave of profits.

Anyways first impressions are a huge problem. I spend all my time documenting this shit. People have asked me questions with the most mislead ideas ever, all because of these content farms and frustrating wikis with no content (looking at you, hidden palace...). It is so annoying and upsetting.

And your "lawyers" and "nintendo ninjas" crap does nothing but encourage the endless circle jerk on platforms like here where people keep spamming about how such and such thing is going to be shut down. Stop encouraging it. Stop making this crap worse.

I'm also somewhat annoyed to see that once again random ebay sellers are using my guides for profit. Hell, I'm less annoyed about that as I am over the fact that there is NO CREDIT.

Prototype stuff, yeah sure that's just flashing a new firmware. I can be annoyed in silence. But iQue is fucking awful. Same seller, same lack of credit. I'm the person that introduced creating custom iQue boards to the world. You would not have been able to create these had I not given you that nice guide. In the very least say "thanks rvtr".

Elliot just worsens my frustration with a shitty video and continual lack of care or research leading to guides people can follow for free (minus parts) being buried further and further down. Think of how cool it would be if he created this himself! Or walked you through a guide! He's got soldering experience, he should know how to do this. He's also got the equipment and money handy. He could have gone into the information about the X4 DS phat. He could have mentioned the other prototype firmware. He could have made something interesting, and something of value. Instead we got more fucking slop. Yippee.

Also hey, if you want to buy prototype or iQue wifi boards, contact me or go to my ebay. Money I made goes into actual prototype preservation and documentation, unlike the other people trying to make a quick buck off my guides!

Yeah that's on par with his usual "content". Back when I was on a big spree of finding retro gaming repair/mod channels that I liked, I very quickly lost interest in his stuff after I found his channel.

@rvtr That's very understandable. I've begun to lose interest in Elliot's channel due to the typical clickbait names and thumbnails, as well as the discussion of topics previously covered by other channels. His sources of information can be slightly misleading at times, he doesn't credit the people who worked on projects he showcased, and his facts are not always correct.

I knew this was going to be a shitty video, but it's still good to see creators sharing their knowledge with others.

The retro future has always seemed shitty to me since he claimed he got scammed in a thumbnail but it was on purpose.

Three options:

*The creator shadowbanned your comment

*Shitty code algorithm from youtube

*You get massive downvoted and youtube hidden your "nasty" comment

Either way you get really fucked which option you get.You cant punch true facts to anyone from youtube video creators.

Edit:To test it i comment negative in his video.I get shadowbanned pointing gbatemp have tutorials long time ago

obligatory angered post incoming, sorry if this sounds like a mess

I've watched The Retro Future back when he was just a small content creator repairing and restoring old handhelds, mostly Game Boys. It was all same-y, but the titles and thumbnails weren't clickbait, and it was nice to have something in the background. He didn't linger on for too long, he just fixed the thing in question and ended the video.

That was several years ago. I saw him quickly move to a new format that he continues to use to this day, picking awful video titles that spread misinfo, just for the sake of getting in the algorithm. I've seen Linus Tech Tips use similar titles to his whenever he talks about Nintendo development items. The Retro Future's reasoning for picking these clickbaity titles are complete BS. You can create a title and thumbnail that is algorithm friendly, you just don't want to.

Ever since then, I've been seeing his videos show up very infrequently on gaming news sites, with everyone pretending as if the thing he's showing is something we've never seen before. Using this one YouTuber as your only source is absolutely not a good idea, and this prototype DS firmware stuff is a clear indicator on why this is. I've yet to see someone give rmc credit for her guides, or give credit to MasChief/Forest of Illusion for dumping and releasing the prototype. rmc hasn't profited from ebay sellers selling this firmware whatsoever, yet others are profiting from her research.

Just so you know: this prototype is free to access by anyone. You shouldn't be paying for it. All background information and context about this prototype is lost with this video. All you should focus on is that "Nintendo could sue me!!!! Ahhh!!!! I'm making these videos for yoouuuu guuuuyyyss!!!!!!!", and it's infuriating to see everyone eat this shit up, even on GBAtemp.

Here are relevant sources:

I stopped watching this guy after he added a headphone jack on the bottom of a gba sp next to the cartridge slot instead of putting it at the back, and kept going on about how good his mod looked

you know, the spot where there's not even a centimeter of space for it, and where your palm usually ends up resting, so it would be in the way whenever you actually used it for what it's used for

by putting it there you lose one of the screws holding the case together too

arrogance is never a good look for content creators

Okay dude but why do you care so much? Seems kinda exaggerated over something so stupid.

Because taking someone's research, profiting from it, and stripping all context away while not crediting the person that made this possible for a poorly researched YouTube video is fucked up? That's all.

It's a microcosm of the internet today as a whole, where a desire to actually teach is left behind for a quick buck on add revenue, and where nobody cares about the things they produce. I don't know if they even want to show off what they have, it's just some tool to get clicks. Tons of youtubers do this, tons of collectors do this, and it fucking sucks.

Honestly, I did find his house renovation videos fun to watch, and I had one of my products featured in his video, so that was cool.

I have to say that I haven't watched TheRetroFuture for a while except for that video some days ago and I also think it's extremely lackluster, the whole content of the video could have been summarized in a few screenshots and two or three short paragraphs. I was actually thinking about your investigations while I was watching it.

Actually, it's not the first time that I have an issue with that kind of videos, this short form content is purely made to appease the YouTube algorithm and every time I watch a 10 minute video that talks about a more or less complex topic I feel like it always misses important and interesting pieces of information, ironically I feel like i have lost my time by watching those videos more than well made long-form content. You can't simply condense that much information in a short video and have a coherent result (or at least, it's very hard to do it right).

Anyways, I also want to take the opportunity to thank you for all the reports on DS(i) prototype and dev stuff you do, I find that kind of stuff very interesting and I completely understand the huge amounts of effort it takes to compile it in a well organized article. Don't let those content farms and lazy content creators let you down!

I tried a keyboard with browns at the flea market last week, and it felt so much worse than blues to me, but that keyboard looked cheap and had no brand, so the switches might have been of terrible quality.
