By 3rd gen, do you mean a 3rd gen 8gb model or a 3rd gen 32/64gb model? If its an 8gb model, downgrade to 3.1.2 and then use sn0wbreeze by iH8Sn0w. If its a 32/64gb model, and you have SHSH blobs for 3.1.2, you can also use sn0wbreeze on it. If you dont have SHSH blobs, you cant jailbreak it yet.
Just to clarify, you're not actually jailbreaking 3.1.2. The tool requires you to be on 3.1.2, and it'll upgrade you to 4.0 when it jailbreaks.
