One sells for 249.99 CAD here, and I've been waiting to get one. However I've heard some negative reviews about it. I really wanted a mainstream player with high compatibility with docks and what not. Is Ipod classic worse than last gen?

I used to have one (returned for a touch) and it's pretty much the same as the 5th gen. The inferface is slightly slower. Not sure if they have improved it since the update in late September. As for compatibility with accessories, I'm not sure. Try iLounge for getting that info.

Well, 80 gig and well priced for it, relatively good battery life, pretty good sized LCD. By high compatibility I mean, you can go to a local supermarket and find an iPod dock, not some other small brand. My father's car has an ipod dock, unless we buy peripheral, we can not make it play other mp3 players.

Get it if you need that much space. It still beats the Zune.

If you can find a new 5th gen though, I would recommend that just because you can flash over the firmware.

Actually I did try one, and notice the lag, I was hoping this is not a long term problem...

Ipod touch is too expensive, my alternative was a sumsang Y2-p2, with the touching thing.

Are you sure that it was upgraded to the most recent firmware? Because the newest firmware made the menus a little bit more snappy, in addition to fixing some other small issues.

I've had my iPod classic for about 2 months now, and I love it. Once I got over the pains of loading my music library onto the thing and getting all the album artwork added, it's been nothing but clear sailing.

Yes, definitely get an iPod Classic. I don't know if there are any Costcos in Canada, but if there are, definitely go there and get a warranty. Great store, with great return policy.

160 GB for $350? :-)

Hell yeah, iPod Classics are better than the iPod Video.
The screen seems to be brighter, new interface, and more storage.

I'd definately say yes to this, yo.

All the people baggin' the iPods are mostly people who think it's cool not to "go with the popular stuff", so to speak.
iPods are great MP3 players - unless you find something else you think suits you better, then get one.

You can use the Classic firmware on the 5g video, and its the same capacity if he's getting the 80gb.

Wasn't aware you can use the old Firmware on the old videos

And the 80gb iPod Videos cost more than the 80gb Classic, last time I checked.

Also, I believe the Classic 80gb are slimmer than the Video 80gb.

They cost the same, but if you're buying retail the hard part is finding a place that still has any in stock.

The main benefit is that its hackable, while the outlook on hacking the new chips on the Classic and 2/3g Nanos is quite bleak.

Honestly, please first try out one at the store. Especially note the lag when scrolling.

yeah there is a slight lag, i wish they upgraded the proc, all the ipod classic is, a new sleek sexy look and a new UI. ohh and Cover flow.

But im getting one because of Apple DRM.
Semi off topic: Don't let the apple store's DRM be the deciding factor in the MP3 player you purchase, you can just burn all of your files onto an MP3 CD-RW (in itunes) and copy the mp3s to your computer

On topic: Gen 5's are better not only due to the ability to hack the firmware, but they are also compatible with non-propriety video out cables (if you want to share a video with some friends on their TV), while the classics had that hardware component removed

i dont know why tv manufactures put the hdmi ports in dumb locations so the cables have to stick out, and then down, putting strain on the ports. Instead of having the ports along the bottom edge of the tv facing downwards.
