In a press release yesterday, Apple said it has sold three million units of its new iPad 3 tablet device since its launch on March 16. With prices ranging from $499 (USD) all the way up to over $800, some of the new features include a "A5X chip with quad-core graphics, a 5 megapixel iSight® camera." According to Apple Senior Vice President Philip Schiller, this is the biggest iPad launch to date.

It didn't take long for iPad 3 to get jailbroken, either. According to a report by ZDnet, within hours of the system's release a hacker by the name MuscleNerd had already posted proof of the system accessing the Cydia Store.

Well well.. Nice profits there if the iPads cost around 350 USD to produce (probably less). Profits around 500-1000 million USD. Not bad

as much as I don't like apple 350$ production costs and 500$ selling price is not really a big profit margin at all considering it also needs to be shipped, taxes need to be paid, and not to forget shops take quite a big chunk of the profit.

People buy this shit ;)
Well for the standard of the achievement it has got, it doesn't look like shit.
Apple products are over-rated and too expensive. Although this has a nice display, It won't be long till other tablet makers will be surpassing this. I would buy an ipad but the lack of external storage really puts me off.

Apple is the Nintendo of tablet.
It's over-rated, and just like apple, it caters to casuals and the competitors will surpass it with better hardware, but people still flock to it, just like they do apple.

I have to agree with this no less.

Apple doesn't have the fastest/juiciest power in the market, but a lot of people still buy them.

However, I find over-rated a little too 'harsh'. I used a couple of Apple products and they do live up to expectation (most of the time).

Does that include units sold to shops and other outlets, and that have not actually been purchased by a consumer ? Shops will by these though expected sales, they may however remain unsold to the public.

I would be intreested to see them release the number of units activated.

Actually they probably made 500-1000 million USD with the 3 million units sold. Apple has an average profit margin of 40% across the board http://www.pcworld.com/article/188196/apples_ipad_profit_breaking_it_down.html . Shipping costs in these cases are not abnormally large since the packages are small and quite a few times the customer is paying for shipping (like in the Apple Store). Store profits are there, but honestly this is a company that doesn't have enough time to use all the profits they're making. That's one of the reasons why they're (finally) giving dividends. They're starting to have too much cash for a company (cash loses value over time so having too much is not really that smart) and investing in factories etc is not smart on the long run if there is no use for the new capacity.

If the following link and the reality of the Apple Store shipping times is taken into account, it's sold units, not shipped like in some cases. http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/03/10/ipad-pre-sales-sold-out-worldwide-in-two-days/
