Can you use BigBlueMenu from the Gateway cartridge to install CIA files without having to actually install it to your home menu? And if you do install it to your home menu can you get rid of it later?

What you mean by installing, but not installing?
The only thing you can do is install it and afterwards uninstall it.

You use bigbluemenu.3ds to install bigbluemenu.cia. Then afterwards, you use the BigBlueMenu installed on your home menu to install other CIA files. I would like to know if I can use bigbluemenu.3ds to install CIA games directly, without having to install bigbluemenu.cia. And if I do have to install bigbluemenu.cia, can I get rid of it later.

Yes, you can simply use the .3ds to install your games.

Thanks! I thought I'd be able to, but since I couldn't find any evidence of a guide saying you can I was afraid of experimenting and doing something bad.

It worked fine. I now have a legit CIA of Mario 3D Land on my 3DS and no trace of BigBlueMenu :-)
