Hello

Let me start off by stating I own several flashcards, an r4i dongle and have modded ds systems .

My intention is buying a legitimate authentic ds game and injecting the same rom into it but in a different language.

My r4i dongle can only extract saves from 3ds/ds cartridges i can't inject a ROM into them.
So far i do not see such a feature with tools on a modded ds unless i am mistaken.

Does anyone know if this is achievable? I don't think buying other hardware and while ill say cost is not too much of an issue i really don't want to pay for than say $100 for such hardware.

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Again I already have flashcarts so i know what to do with them but I wanted for example to inject english translated roms of the tales ds games into their Japanese official versions

No, it is not possible as legitimate DS games are read only. In theory it might be possible to do it with fake "repro" carts if someone figures out how to write to them as it is already possible to reflash "repro" GBA carts. But definitely not for authentic carts.

repro carts have cheaper saving memory that often corrupts i think if i go that route i might as well just print my own sticker and stick on the flashcart.

I have flashed ''repro'' gb carts with my joey bag jr from bennvenn but it can't flash an original cartridge ( well i tried once and it corrupted it)

As above the read only part of read only memory tells you most of what you need to know.

There are two occasions where this might make sense, maybe three.

1) Classically you might have seen some games be able to have the ROM chip removed, replaced with either a protocol/pin compatible write once ROM or even flash memory chip and then whatever (including hacked version of the original game, which has some interesting considerations for copyright -- there have been somewhat analogous cases in DVDs some years back). GB/GBC being the most noted for this one around here. https://web.archive.org/web/20150811030014/http://www.reinerziegler.de/readplus.htm , though some of the GBA repros kind of go there as well. Some would also use normally read-write flash carts and turn them read only before making their own shells/labels but different discussion there.

2) The devs left whatever translation on the cartridge but gated it off from normal play but with a specially tweaked save you could do something. 99% of the time you see this it will be a cheat (indeed it is generally going to be the same language forcing cheat for most games, though some variously hardcode said cheat) or normal hack (for the GBA there was a game that had an English script onboard but no easy selection method) that effects the change and it is vanishingly rare as well for Japanese stuff to have this (indeed you are more likely to see a game with Japanese text gated off be unlocked than you are the other way around, the DS having a handful of examples of this). Trying to work up a save exploit into making a cheat that also works for conventional saving purposes would be difficult as well.

3) More theoretical at this point but there are some games with massive saves (see something like was it Daigasso Band Brothers or one of the other music games that could download and store songs and Warioware DIY) that combined with 2) could be used to effect such a thing where a convention save even slammed down to one slot and no backups would struggle to have enough space*. Where you are more likely to see this in practice is some Wii translations and hacks actually that use the saves or some other exploit to overwrite things. The 3ds and switch also saw means to have files virtually replaced so people could do things on that front as well but no such option exists for normal DS, hacked DSi or 3ds is more of a possibility. Various clone consoles might also offer the ability to run a patch with it but that is getting off topic.

*theoretically you could chain something with a network read or GBA slot read but we are getting silly at this point.

Well for GBA carts there is Burn2slot but it only works with certain "reproduction" carts, not originals. Not sure if DS repro carts that use rewritable memory exist and even if they do someone would still need to figure out how to write to them.

aliexpress sells multi/repro DS carts that are actually Ace3DS carts for 10-12$ ,seems like it's the preferred method, when it come to put a custom rom on a cart
Etsy has TONS of them

a bit more info on those carts on youtube

You can get the Ace3DS+ clones for about half of that if you search for "R4 Wood". You don't get the microSD full of games but who knows how long the knockoff microSD will survive anyway.
