I'm not saying it should be anything huge, but a limit of 50KB per avatar is a bit ridiculous in this day and age, I'm constantly having to either optimize the heck out of my images or export them as low quality jpegs just so they'll upload to this site.

Maybe something like 100KB or even 200KB would be better? 50 is kinda low in my opinion.

Of course it could just be my opinion, if you have reasoning for it staying the same, please tell me why.

Gravatar does work well, it's just a pain in the ass to have to go all the way to an external site to change my avatar here, and then wait for it to sync up.
Plus a lot of the time I want my avatar here to be different to my global Gravatar

You do realise that your avatar is shown as a 114x114 pixel image right? You're doing something wrong if you fail to get it within the current limits.

Interesting, for some reason I have to upload them as 192x192, else they will get resized.

I have to agree with this. However, not everyone feels like scaling down an image, or even know how to bother with that.

You tell me if there's a visual difference in the compressed image.
I do that, but most of the time the forum rejects the new image despite it being within the size requirements, for no logical reason.

A lot of the time I have one image I want to upload as an avatar to a few different sites (Not all, which is why I dont use Gravatar), the image is usually say a few hundred pixels each way. I don't want to have to go all the way into my image editing program and resize the image (Not to mention it turns out horrible whenever I do that), just for this site when others have much more sensible limits.
If thats such a big thing, why doesnt the server itself resize images and then calculate the size and check it with 50KB or whatever?

So what you're saying is that you can't be bothered spending less than a minute to resize and update your avatar. How often do you change your avatar that this actually becomes an issue?

Resize it to 192x192, then upload to tinypng, then to GBAtemp. As I said,
For some reason I have to upload them as 192x192, else they will get resized
which undoes the compression.

It rejects them even within those limits, plus I didnt see that post when I wrote mine.

Its not less than a minute, I dont have experience with image editing so I have to load the program, work out how to even resize images, then do it, realise it turned out terrible, spend another few minutes working out how to not make it terrible, then realise it doesnt even fit within 50Kb anyway, use tinypng, then the forum doesnt accept the new image, and I just give up and use Gravatar.

I'm sorry, but really? You don't know how to open MS Paint and hit the "resize" button? You're way over-complicating this. Just put the avatar in paint, make the dimensions at or under the 200x200 limit, and it should be less than the 50kb limit.

I agree with the higher size limit, but give Faststone Image Viewer a try, it allows editing and has the best resizing out of all resizing programs I've ever seen! It doesn't lose any of it's quality and it's just 2 clicks to do what you need.

Paint doesn't work with transparency, and usually does a botched job when I resize large images to small sizes, when other methods produce much better results.

The point of all this isn't "How do I resize to 50kb", its "50kb is a stupid restriction in the first place, why is it still a thing". I'd like to know why this limit still exists.

There's no point in using transparency for your avatar since it will be surrounded by a frame anyway. Paint.net is one of many applications that handle transparency just fine though should you need it for something else.

Mobile connections and limited data plans should be enough of a reason as to why the limits exist.

I also recommend Gravitar. If you don't want to update every site at the same time... Maybe just use Gravitar for Temp? Or learn the basics of image manipulation, if you can even call resizing an image that.

This really comes across as a non issue caused by lack of willingness to spend what you agree would be a five minute job max.

Me avvy is 304x304 pixels and under 50kb iirc.

I personally would like to see it upped to 100kb, allows for sharper images but eh.

Edit: Gravatar doesn't seem to work for me anymore.
