Thought that late 16d4s required the kamikaze nonsense no? and 16d5s are not flashable to this day. Unless i am sorely out of date.

16D4S drives can be dumped.
Flashing it requires a Kamikaze/Sputnik, depending on the PCB chipset.

16D5S drives need a RGH in order to obtain the drive keys.

so my hunch was right :P
I corrected my first post to mention that XD.
kamikaze is not for the faint of heart. RGH as much as i love doing them at that point i personally would not revert back to retail but thats just me. LOL
I recall doing RGH2 and buying one of those cheapo LTU2 clone boards off ebay a few years back. I got a slim that had a missing dvd drive. good times.

16D4S drives don't need any additional hardware to have their firmware dumped.
Having a 16D4S drive in a console is a preferable thing if one wants to install an Xkey in there.

I don't know why people are still bothering with disc based backups.
Harddrives come cheap and Xkeys aren't to crazy expensive neither.
You've got one for the price of 2-3 Verbatim cakeboxes.
But you know, some like to cheap out on convenience I guess.

Yeah, I know what you mean i have seen Xkeys for 20 bucks in a lot of places. Personally and just because i like homebrew i rather spend the 5 bucks on glitch chip and call it a day. Thats neither here nor there in this case though :P.

I literally would be happy with just playing legit copies of games. But the drive it came with doesn't have the lid.

you are fine though mate. Chances are the drive had custom firmware when the XGD3 update came out and it didnt flash it properly (i remember hearing about that issue a few years back.
To install jungle flasher disable driver signature enforcement in windows (google it) that will give you a good headstart.

and yes that is a billion percent 16d2s.

I disabled the signature enforcement and jungleflasher doesn't pick the drive up. But the bios does. So idk

You can gut a broken down PC drive and salvage the top plastic/magnetic donut.
That's the only thing needed to keep the disc in place really ;p
I have a bunch of older IDE disk drives. Will those work?

the kamikaze method is insane. I've never done one, but I've read up on how to do one a while back. it's amazing that someone came up with it.
