I'm new to forums so if my question has been asked, I apologize. Can I unhack my Wii? My grandson did what he calls a softmod but I think he didn't do it correctly. My discs will play sometimes and sometimes not. He was here last night, changed something now none of my discs will work. My husband and I play Mario Kart everynight but now it won't read the disc. Can someone help me, please?

Hmm. Maybe whatever he did can be fixed. What exactly did he do? If you can't answer that, then list what channels show up on the Wii menu, and if Homebrew Channel is installed. (it should be if he did a softmod, aka Software Modification) If it is, open it and list the apps in it. You can tell a lot about what was done by the apps in HBC, unless he took the SD Card, which he probably didn't.

The step after that would be to plug the SD card from the Wii into the computer and put Syscheck on it, and run it through HBC to look at the Wii's internals and what was modified.

Only a small variety of things can effect disc loading. What seems likely to me is that one of the IOS that some of your games run on were modified or uninstalled. Mario Kart Wii runs on IOS36. He might have installed a broken IOS36 over it. Should be an easy fix with a wad manager and a wad of IOS36.

    Thanks!

I don't know what he did, but I know the SD card is still there and the Homebrew is still there. I don't know much about hacking but I will try to follow what you have said to do.

I'll try looking at that and see if I can figure it out. Thanks again.

That SysCheck he mentioned, you can either post the results so we can see them ( http://gbatemp.net/threads/posting-a-system-check.300279/ ) or download ModMii for Windows onto your computer ( http://gbatemp.net/threads/modmii-for-windows-official-support-topic.207126/ ) and have it open the file that SysCheck created. When it does that, it can download everything you need to update and/or fix any problems you might be having with a incorrectly hacked Wii AND generate a steb-by-step guide of how to get that all done. (It's a lot easier than it sounds.)

ModMii would also be a good place to get a hold of that IOS36 WAD (download page 1) that you're probably needing to fix Mario Kart.

Is there a way to do it in Ubuntu? My husband is a big fan of Linux so when my computer started having problems he put Ubuntu on it and took off Windows 7. I can barely navigate windows (LOL) but he is here all the time so if I need to do something he helps me. He doesn't know anything about Wii systems or he would be fixing this plus he wants me to try and learn.

As of now, none of my games will play. I get the can't read disk error. :-(

hmm, NONE of your games is rather odd ... but the IOS36 WAD you need to install you can get from http://gbatemp.net/threads/nus-wad-packer-v1-0-released.174577/#post-2195239 with linux
See if installing the WAD fixes Mario Kart at least.

Could it be the disc drive laser on it's way out?
If Ios 36 would be broken, you wouldn't expect it to work half the time like it did in the beginning.
Did the problem started right after he did the softmod or only later?
If he changed something and things got worse, wouldn't you expect him to undo those changes afterwards? (At least I would)

I remember having a similar issue but in my case it was NGC games that wouldn't work, so I used cMIOSWiiGator0.2 and then the games worked again.

I hope that your Wii gets fixed.

I tried to do syscheck and now when I start My HBC it just goes back to the health screen and doesn't open HBC. Since my computer has Ubuntu on it I had my husband download Modmii(the latest ver.) and put the copy_to_sd on card. I put it in and started Wii, clicked letterbomb and Hackmii screen came up but won't show #1 to continue. Any Ideas?

Hmm, it does take a moment for that 1 to continue part to come up. How long are you waiting?

Yeah, you're right. That's too long.

Try replacing the boot.elf file from the root of your SD card (sd:/boot.elf) with the boot.dol file from your /apps/syscheck/ folder (sd:/apps/syscheck/boot.dol -> sd:/boot.dol) and run the letterbomb again. If we're lucky this should at least let you post the syscheck to get an IDEA of what might be going wrong here.
