It doesn't block games to be played on a banned Switch. You can still use it except online.

You can play all games with a certificate ban, just not online. In particular, you can still enjoy local multiplayer

You can use a wide way to install updates on the Switch and the games even if you're banned.

I think you could get the update for the game from another machine for local multiplayer. Also, you can manually install update nsps. Also, you can just not play the latest version.

What? I have never heard that you cannot play games which are not on the latest version. The only game where that might apply is Fortnite as you could play it while being banned (probably?) and you would need the current update

If i choose to just start the game it just takes me to the update screen and then fails because of the ban.

And that is why ( as previous posters have said ) you have to find an alternative way to download the update files and install from your sd card

It's because OP decided to go online with his banned Switch. The Switch has detected that there are new updates available, but cannot download them.

Either reinstall your games or download the latest updates from places. Either method will fix your problem. Then use 90DNS to prevent this happening in the future.
