Hacking If I buy a new n3ds right now. what firmware can I expect?

My brother is thinking about getting a 3ds for my nephew, but he won't be buying games for the system and he isn't one to deal with hard-modding and stuff so if it comes with 11.0.0 it will be useless. Is a n3ds bought in stores in new york likely to still be on 10.7.0 or lower?

Most likely 10.7 or below. But now Nintendo is manufacturing New 3DS XL's on 11.0, so there is absolutely no guarantee. However, you can always return the system and say that you decided you don't want if it's on 11.0.

If it is being bought in person you can use one of the fw by serial number guides available here or on reddit.

You can probably still find 9.6 and lower models. I know my local Walmart has some that have been sitting for ages, one of which has a serial that should be 9.2.

Bought mine today from walmart and can confirm it's 10.7. PHEW!

the special editions are the safest bet to buy since there's only a couple which come with 11.0.0-33

I bought the mario bundle today - and yes it is at 10.7.0-32U.
