What are the chances it'll be moddable?

Yes, you just won't be able to play backup discs, DVD movies, or install bootmii as boot2. You can use a HDD for the first 2.

I think that WiiMC has support for external DVD players, but I might be wrong. Last I checked that was a recent feature addition.
