though holding "l" at boot it is possible to load emunand eith 9.0 firmware90.bin and load gateway.

I do not use updatedsysnand. I use menuhax to autoboot Gateway GW.3dsx renamed as gw3d.3dsx (placed on root of mSD) by holding L until the backlight turns off (splash screen turns off if you have a splash.bin) then I hold the R button to trigger menuhax. Holding L just long enough to get AuReiNand booting to 9.0 firmlaunch sysNAND and then triggering menuhax to autoload gw3d.3dsx. I use yellows8 hblauncher_loader.cia to load homebrew launcher through 9.0 firmlaunch sysNAND. I have both oot and cn but this way I can autoboot GW which I use more than the homebrew launcher and load homebrew launcher from sysNAND. If someone has a easier setup please share as I am trying to make it as easy as possible to launch .3dsx homebrew without OOT or CN.

I like using my Gateway for DevMenu and trying out homebrew that's available on .3DS format, so Sky3DS wouldn't be too useful for me.

With a cfw you can load homebrews in. 3ds from Sky3ds I think, but don't quote me on that

I'm not sure what you're talking about. CFW will let you run .cias, it won't affect how the Sky3DS works, which is to imitate a cartridge.

A cfw patches signature checks so I think also signature checks on game cards

I bought my gw card one year ago, and now it's a bit obsolete. Anyway it's very comfortable to put roms on it and play them on 3ds. It's possible to make a cfw that can use it, or a plugin for ntr?

Yes, we can do it. I ordered my Sky3DS+ when only Ironhax was running on my n3DS with userland HB.
It was great to finally have the possibility of downgrading and so on, at first I felt a bit... fucked (roughly fucked). But I use my Sky3DS everyday, to play and to launch HB/hackrom/whatever. (but obviously for this option you need sigcheck disabled.)
