...if Nintendo distributed Wii firmware 4.4 after all these years just as a giant "fuck you" to all homebrewers.

3DS firmware 11.17.0-50 was exactly that, distributed just after the eShop closed to patch most known exploits.

Yeah I guess, but the eshop closed last year then the patch happened.
The Wii shop closed 5 years ago and I don’t think there was a patch since or ever will happened, but anything’s possible

This would have no impact on homebrew at all.

All online services are defunct. No new games get released? What for would anyone run an update?
Many people wouldn't now since they don't have their Wii connected to the internet (anymore)... just those using unofficial software right now. And those people won't voluntarily run a potentially problematic update to gain... nothing.

Nintendo is strange at times, but I don't think it is likely for them to invest money into such an idea.

It would be more than hard to mitigate disc based exploits. Wii security had been shredded ages ago (thankfully).

@Psionic Roshambo, CPS II machines were also difficult due to the suicide battery keeping the chips alive containing the decryption keys to decrypt the game. And if the battery died, then the game won't boot.

Honestly with the library of the PS3 and Wii.... For me the Wii wins that gen. I like FPS more on PC so that just kills the PS3 library... Wii had more odd games.

    Just my opinion of course
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Most everyone else would pick the PS3
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I bet if someone did a huge detailed survey of what consoles and PCs people owned at the time. It probably would be if someone didn't have a full gaming PC that the PS3 did offer a better experience for them.

If someone had a nice PC they probably enjoyed the Wii for the games that couldn't be found on PC
